Incheon airport overtakes Heathrow and Dubai as world's busiest for international passengers

Incheon claims the top spot

South Korea's Incheon International Airport has become the world's busiest airport for international passengers for the first time since opening in 2001, handling 38.4 million international passengers in the first half of 2026 according to preliminary data from the Airports Council International (ACI). The figures, released on Thursday, placed Incheon above London's Heathrow at 37.79 million and Singapore's Changi at 34.53 million. RTP reported a slightly higher figure of 38.89 million for Incheon. ACI noted the figures were "subject to final validation" and that it would publish the data next month.

Middle East disruption drives shift

The US-Iran conflict, which began in late February, disrupted Middle Eastern aviation hubs, particularly Dubai. ACI data showed Dubai's international passenger numbers fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March, recovering only to roughly 4.7 million by June. The Gulf airport all but closed in the days following the start of the conflict. While Emirates airline restarted flights within days, traffic has yet to return to prewar levels. Dubai, which ranked second in both 2024 and 2025 based on full-year statistics, is expected to fall outside the top five this year.

Incheon captures transfer traffic

European and Asian airlines recorded a rise in passengers flying directly between the two regions rather than transferring in the Middle East. Incheon benefited from this shift, with transfer passengers rising 18% year-on-year. The number of transfer passengers whose final destinations were in Europe rose 63.2% to 210,000. Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) said the weakened transfer function of Middle Eastern airports shifted demand toward direct and connecting services through Incheon.

Tourism boom and infrastructure expansion

South Korea has also been experiencing a tourism boom, driven by growing visitors from China and Japan and the popularity of cultural properties such as the KPop Demon Hunters film, as well as growth in its tech and beauty industries. Foreigners accounted for 39.3% of Incheon's passengers in the first half of 2026, up from 35.2% for the whole of 2025, reaching a record 44.4% in the second quarter. Virgin Atlantic began flying to Incheon from Heathrow this year. A four-phase expansion completed in late 2024 increased the airport's annual capacity to 106 million passengers. Incheon now serves 101 airlines flying to 183 cities, including 158 international destinations, compared with 139 for Hong Kong, 92 for Shanghai's Pudong and 86 for Tokyo's Narita.

Heathrow and Istanbul dynamics

Heathrow recorded 40 million total passengers in the first half of 2026, including both domestic and international travellers, its busiest first half on record. Passenger traffic to Asia-Pacific rose 7.9%, while capacity to the Middle East fell 16.5%. Earlier this week, Istanbul overtook Heathrow as Europe's busiest airport by total passenger numbers, with 8.15 million passengers passing through its terminals in July compared with Heathrow's 7.9 million.

Incheon's steady ascent

Incheon has climbed the international rankings steadily since opening in 2001. It was 10th in the world in 2002, rose to fifth in 2018, and placed third in 2024 and 2025 according to the Guardian and Financial Times. BBC reported different figures, placing Incheon 12th in 2024 and 13th in 2025, likely reflecting a different ranking methodology.

The acting president of the Incheon airport corporation addressed the milestone.

We're grateful for the [South Korean] government's support, the public's encouragement and the hard work of everyone stationed at the airport in making Incheon the world's No. 1 airport.

Kim added that the corporation planned to strengthen competitiveness by focusing on passenger convenience.
