Israel marks October 7 anniversary with strike on Hamas commander as UN urges permanent truce
Three years after the 2023 attacks, Israel reported killing 4,000 infiltrators and targeted a Hamas commander, while the UN called for an enduring ceasefire.
National memorial and the pursuit of 7 October attackers
Israel observed a national memorial day on 5 October 2026, lowering flags to half-mast at 6:29 am to mark the exact moment Hamas launched its cross-border assault three years earlier. Speaking at the Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military campaign as a necessary conflict and rejected foreign criticism of Israeli operations.
Israel is waging a War of Revival, which is absolutely necessary and just.
During the commemorations, the Israel Defense Forces announced the death of a Hamas Nukhba commander in the Gaza Strip who had participated in the 7 October 2023 attack. Military officials stated that the operative was actively preparing strikes against Israeli soldiers and civilians while working to rebuild Hamas operational capabilities in violation of the existing truce.
Intelligence figures on Hamas infiltrators
Defense Minister Israel Katz reported on 5 October 2026 that Israeli forces have killed roughly 4,000 of the estimated 6,000 fighters who breached the border during the 2023 assault. The data was compiled and presented to the Israeli security cabinet on the evening of 4 October 2026 by Major General Shlomi Binder, head of the Military Intelligence Directorate.
- Killed to date
- 4000
- Remaining
- 2000
- Total estimated infiltrators
- 6000
Earlier military estimates had calculated that between 1,200 and 1,600 gunmen were killed on Israeli territory out of approximately 5,600 initial infiltrators, with thousands subsequently retreating into Gaza. The ongoing hunt for the remaining participants is led by Nili, a specialized unit within the Shin Bet security service. Katz affirmed that both he and Netanyahu ordered security forces to target every participant without operational restrictions across all command levels.
Truce tensions and United Nations appeals
The commemorations occurred against the backdrop of a fragile security arrangement established when US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in October 2025. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a formal message on 5 October 2026, urging the parties to transition the temporary arrangement into an enduring settlement and permit unhindered relief operations.
It is time for the ceasefire to become permanent. It is time to allow large-scale humanitarian aid. It is time to respect international law.
- Hamas infiltrates southern Israel, killing 1,221 people and taking 251 hostages

- Israel marks memorial day as forces kill a Hamas Nukhba commander in Gaza
Casualty figures from the conflict remain stark. The 7 October 2023 attack killed 1,221 people in Israel, mostly civilians according to an Agence France-Presse tally of official data, and saw 251 hostages taken into Gaza. Subsequent Israeli military operations in the strip have killed more than 74,200 people, the majority of them civilians according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry that the United Nations evaluates as reliable.
Broader regional objectives and postwar governance
Postwar governance in Gaza remains unresolved as Israel continues to control the majority of the territory. The Israeli government refuses to withdraw its troops until independent verification confirms the complete disarmament of Hamas, whereas Hamas leaders reject immediate unilateral disarmament and propose a phased process. Netanyahu insisted at Mount Herzl that Hamas will never regain power in the enclave. He also stated that Israeli military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon aim to create future conditions for peace, while warning that Israel will prevent the Iranian government from posing an existential threat.
