Western coalition restricts settlement trade

Twelve Western nations announced on 8 September 2026 that they will introduce national trade restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The joint declaration, published by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot after consultations between French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, includes Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Barrot explained the multilateral decision in a public statement.

“Why are we doing this? Because the West Bank is close to boiling point: there is rampant settlement expansion, a surge of violence against Palestinians by extremist settlers, and terrorist acts that have been condemned by Israeli authorities themselves.”

British import ban and parliamentary debate

In London, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband presented an import ban on settlement products to Parliament, following the cabinet transition under Prime Minister Andy Burnham in July 2026. Deputy Minister Pat McFadden noted that the measures target settlement activity rather than broader Israeli commerce. Miliband stated that the current Israeli government approved more settlements during four years than over the previous two decades. Sourced estimates record over 500,000 Israeli settlers living alongside approximately 3 million Palestinians across the West Bank outside East Jerusalem.

Miliband told members of Parliament that settler actions meet definitions of forced displacement.

“The British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists.”

Israeli retaliation and consulate closure

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar coordinated four diplomatic countermeasures with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday afternoon. Israel ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, which handles diplomatic accreditation with the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Sa'ar also removed British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat and halted British military training of Palestinian Authority security forces run by the British Support Team in Ramallah.

Entry bans and accusations of interference

Israel barred entry to twelve British citizens and elected officials, including former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, accusing them of antisemitism. Sa'ar claimed the British government timed the sanctions ahead of Jewish holidays and the UK Labour Party conference. President Isaac Herzog said during a speech in Jerusalem that trade restrictions harm Palestinian employment and interfere in Israel's late October 2026 general election. Sa'ar referenced the 1917 Balfour Declaration to argue the sanctions contradict earlier British commitments.

Sa'ar denounced the British policy in his formal response.

“The British move is morally distorted and constitutes blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign state and in its electoral process.”
