Ireland stars Caelan Doris and Jack Crowley ruled out until new year with injuries
Caelan Doris and Jack Crowley face extended layoffs until January following surgical complications and a vascular condition, sidelining both from Ireland's November tests.
Doris sidelined after knee infection setback
Leinster and Ireland captain Caelan Doris will miss the remainder of 2026 following complications from summer surgery. Doris suffered a foot injury during the opening stages of Leinster's United Rugby Championship final win over the Bulls at Croke Park in June. Medical staff elected to perform an operation on his knee at the same time as the foot procedure. Doris subsequently missed Ireland's Nations Championship fixtures against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand in July. An infection in the knee delayed his planned November return, which had targeted tests against Argentina, Fiji, South Africa, and the Twickenham finals. Leinster expects Doris to return by early January for European pool matches against Pau and Leicester ahead of the 2027 Six Nations.
Crowley manages vascular condition in lower limb
Munster fly-half Jack Crowley has been ruled out until at least the festive period as he continues rehabilitation for a lower limb vascular condition. The issue began after Crowley's last appearance against Benetton in April, followed by late warm-up withdrawals against Ulster and the Lions in May. Munster head coach Clayton McMillan confirmed the diagnosis as a narrowing of a blood vessel. Medical protocols require complete rest from running and kicking drills, limiting Crowley to upper-body resistance training. Crowley stated in Lyon that he is taking a week-to-week approach to recovery while aiming for a return around Christmas or the new year.
Crowley described the sudden onset of the condition when attempting routine drills.
I tried to go out to run and kick and I couldn't. It was very evident straight away, but (not) evident walking around.
Munster governance review and squad reaction
Crowley also addressed ongoing structural assessments within Munster following public remarks from former captain Peter O'Mahony in his autobiography. O'Mahony criticized the province's leadership and past contract negotiations under former head coach Graham Rowntree following the Roger Randle controversy. Similar criticisms were voiced the previous year by Conor Murray and Keith Earls. Munster began their competitive season under McMillan with a home defeat against Glasgow. Crowley noted that the playing group remains detached from administrative reviews and focused on winter fixtures against teams like Dragons in Newport.
Crowley emphasized the playing squad's focus on collective performance over institutional politics.
As a playing group, it's solely around how we can deliver performances consistently. And you can't do that if you're putting your focus elsewhere and expending your energy in areas that you can't control.
Autumn international absences and recovery schedule
The dual injuries leave Ireland head coach Andy Farrell without two key starters for the November international window. Doris previously missed the Lions tour to Australia after a shoulder injury in Leinster's Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton, before returning to play all five 2026 Six Nations matches. Both Doris and Crowley missed Ireland's July fixtures and will miss upcoming matches against southern hemisphere opponents. Both players are scheduled to resume competitive rugby in January ahead of the Six Nations campaign and European pool matches.
