Iran's World Cup team arrives in Los Angeles today amid visa disputes and threats of flag protests
The Iranian national football team is set to touch down in Los Angeles this afternoon, hours before its World Cup opener, with visa restrictions and warnings over opposition flags fuelling a politically charged atmosphere.
A delicate arrival
Iran’s Team Melli will land at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday afternoon after a 20-minute flight from Tijuana, Mexico, where it was forced to set up a last-minute base camp instead of the originally planned Tucson, Arizona. The switch followed the Trump administration’s rejection of visa applications for several Iranian team officials. The team’s first press conference is scheduled for 15:45 local time at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, next to the airport.
A Mexican foothold
Having been denied a longer US stay, the Iranian delegation will only enter American territory at the latest possible moment and must depart immediately after Monday’s match against New Zealand. The late shift to Tijuana reflects the deep diplomatic freeze triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Tehran in late February, which plunged the Middle East into an ongoing war and turned Iran into one of the tournament’s most scrutinised participants.
Tehrangeles and the flag dispute
Los Angeles’s vast Iranian diaspora, about 500,000 people, has earned the city the nickname “Tehrangeles.” Supporters are expected to give the team a noisy welcome, but several organisations have called for protests outside the stadium on Monday. Demonstrators plan to wave the pre-Islamic Revolution flag, the green, white and red banner bearing a lion and sun, and some may enter the venue to boo the Iranian national anthem, repeating scenes from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Tehran draws a red line
Iranian officials are already pushing back.
Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali went further, warning that Iran would closely monitor “flags and slogans” and that the match could be halted if symbols deemed hostile to the Islamic Republic appeared. The federation president reiterated his demand on Saturday, insisting that only the current Iranian flag be allowed inside World Cup venues.FIFA is responsible according to the protocols. One of those protocols stipulates that the official flag of a country must be present in the stadium.
The road through Group G
All of Iran’s group-stage matches will be played on US soil. After Monday’s opener against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium, the team returns to the same venue on 21 June to face Belgium and then travels to Seattle for a 26 June clash with Egypt at Lumen Field. The tight, heavily guarded schedule mirrors the larger geopolitical standoff that has followed the team across the border.
