An international investment consortium finalized the acquisition of a 90% stake in Portuguese top-flight club Estrela da Amadora on 25 August 2026. The investment group is led by investment firms ADvantage and LEAD, with strategic backing from the KI Group, an enterprise headquartered in Cologne with operations established in Portugal. According to transaction details reported during the sale, the consortium paid 40 million euros ($47 million) to outgoing owner and president Paulo Lopo. The purchase price compares to the 72,000 euros ($84,000) Lopo paid when acquiring the club in 2020. The transaction transfers control of the club's SAD into a new structure uniting partners across the fields of sports, investment, and technology.

High-profile football investors

Four prominent European footballers hold stakes within the buying consortium, all of whom share past careers at Bayern Munich. The investor lineup includes 2014 German World Cup winners Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels, 2018 French World Cup winner Lucas Hernandez, and former Swiss international goalkeeper Yann Sommer. The 37-year-old Sommer, who earned over 90 caps for Switzerland, joined Belgian club Club Brugge on a three-season deal this summer after leaving Serie A champion Inter Milan. The 36-year-old Müller currently plays in Major League Soccer for the Vancouver Whitecaps, while 30-year-old Hernandez and 37-year-old Hummels also featured alongside them at various stages in Munich.

Leadership change and club vision

Following the deal, 35-year-old Johannes Mösmang officially took over the presidency of CFEA - Club Football Estrela, SAD, succeeding Paulo Lopo after his six-year tenure. Mösmang spent the past ten years working in the player-management department at Bayern Munich, where he worked closely with players, coaching staff, and senior club management. The new leadership group outlined plans to develop the club through investments in stadium infrastructure, academy training, data innovation, and modern sports technology.

Trajectory from insolvency to the top flight

The takeover follows a six-year rebuilding period after years of financial distress. The club was declared insolvent in 2011, later merging with Sintra in 2020 to restart competition in the Portuguese third tier, the Campeonato de Portugal. Estrela earned promotion back to the top-tier Primeira Liga in 2023. During the 2025/26 season, the team finished 15th in the 18-club division, retaining top-flight status on a head-to-head tiebreaker over Casa Pia. Based in the city of Amadora, ten kilometers northwest of Lisbon, Estrela's squad features Romanian forward Ianis Stoica alongside French players Lucas Mincarelli, Tom Moustier, Emerson Vanga, and Bénito Souza.
