Polish writer and translator Ignacy Karpowicz died on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at the age of 50. His death was announced in a social media statement by Wydawnictwo Literackie, the publishing house where he released his books in recent years, and confirmed to the Polish Press Agency (PAP). No cause of death was disclosed in the official notices. The publisher remembered him as an author who brought Polish literature into a new dimension through his distinctive novels, describing him as a sensitive, intelligent, and colourful person who lived with the same boldness and defiance present in his writing. Prior to his death, Karpowicz was writing a new novel for Wydawnictwo Literackie and had recently spoken about the forthcoming project with his editors.

Early life, education, and literary debut

Karpowicz was born in Białystok in 1976. He pursued higher education at the University of Warsaw, where his academic focus included Iberian studies and African studies. Before gaining prominence as a novelist, he worked as a literary translator, translating texts into Polish from English, Spanish, and Amharic. He made his debut as a novelist in 2006 with the publication of Niehalo by Wydawnictwo Czarne. The debut novel drew critical attention and secured him his first nomination for the Paszport Polityki prize, establishing his entrance into the Polish literary community.

Critical honours and major publications

His third published novel, Gesty, became a finalist for the Nike Literary Award, initiating a series of nominations for the country's most prominent literary distinction. In 2011, Karpowicz released Balladyny i romanse, which reached the Nike Award final and won the Paszport Polityki. The prize jury commended the book for its momentum, bravery, and humour, noting that it invited the reader into an intelligent dialogue about the modern world. In promotional material for the novel, Karpowicz reflected on his ambition to write fiction that combined accessibility with thematic depth.

A few years ago I realized that it is essentially a simple solution to write an outstanding novel for fifteen people. That is not so difficult. If someone has a kind of talent, is hardworking, they can easily knock out such a masterpiece. It is much harder to write a book that contains something deeper within itself, yet is written in such a reader-friendly language.

Karpowicz went on to publish the novels Cud, Ości, Sońka, and Miłość. Both Ości and Sońka became finalists for the Nike Literary Award, making four of his books Nike finalists across his career. In addition to the jury nomination, Ości received the Nike readers' choice prize. His final completed novel, Ludzie z nieba, was published in 2024.

Creative philosophy and character empathy

Throughout his career, Karpowicz stressed the importance of psychological closeness with the figures in his narratives, regardless of their background or personal traits. In a 2014 interview with PAP following the release of Sońka, he described how he approached character development across his fiction.

Every one of my characters, even if she is a woman, even if I do not particularly like them, has something of me. I try to show empathy toward all the characters in my novels.

His passing concludes a twenty-year publishing career spanning eight novels and multiple translations. Wydawnictwo Literackie expressed condolences to his family and relatives following the announcement.
