US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing to introduce four-legged robotic devices into its immigration enforcement operations across the United States. According to procurement documents posted on the Department of Homeland Security website, the federal agency plans to allocate up to $2 million for quadruped robots from Massachusetts-based manufacturer Boston Dynamics. The contract is scheduled to be finalized before the end of the year. ICE intends to deploy the remote-controlled Spot robots primarily for situational awareness and threat assessment in hazardous, unstable, or difficult-to-access environments. Official tender notices contain no indications that the robots will carry offensive weaponry or attack functions. The market-research notice published on Friday forms part of a broader push to incorporate advanced technical systems into federal deportation procedures.
Corporate ethics rules and commercial deployment
The planned acquisition draws attention to commercial restrictions established by the robot manufacturer regarding the operational use of its hardware. Boston Dynamics maintains explicit guidelines on its website prohibiting the weaponization of its robotic products by any client or partner organization.

Public safety agencies also utilize comparable remote-controlled quadrupeds for bomb disposal operations and hazardous chemical response where human entry poses severe danger.
Electroshock glove contract and safety concerns
The robotic dog initiative follows another controversial equipment acquisition finalized by immigration authorities. ICE recently awarded an approximately $16.7 million contract to a Kentucky-based supplier to acquire 6,000 electroshock gloves. Known as Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters (G.L.O.V.E.), the units activate via a button and discharge electric currents directly upon skin contact. Agency officials classified the equipment as de-escalation devices, stating that structured training will reduce the necessity of deploying higher-tier lethal force. However, documentation from the manufacturer warns that the electric shocks can increase risks leading to sudden death. Democratic lawmakers submitted formal letters objecting to the procurement before the contract award, raising concerns regarding operations in metropolitan centers such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis, Houston, and communities in Maine.
