A tie-break decides the fourth round
Hubert Hurkacz lost 1:6, 6:3, 7:6 to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday, 13 October, in the fourth round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters 2026. The defeat ended a run of nine straight match wins that Hurkacz carried into the match. He had been two points away from victory in the decider. He won the first set 6:1 in 25 minutes, breaking his opponent in the opening games and holding his own service games with aces. A bandage was visible on Hurkacz's knee as he walked on court.
Davidovich Fokina changed the pattern in the second set. He broke Hurkacz in the fourth game, moved to a 4:1 lead and took the set 6:3 after Hurkacz had dropped serve twice. Hurkacz broke back and had chances at 4:4, but Davidovich Fokina pulled ahead to 5:3 and closed the set quickly.
Third set and the tie-break
Neither player lost serve in the third set, and Hurkacz had four break points across the set without converting any of them. The set went to a tie-break, where Hurkacz trailed 4:6 and saved two match points. Davidovich Fokina then won a point with a precise shot down the line. In the final exchange Hurkacz narrowly missed, and the Spaniard took the tie-break 7:6 to win the match.

Head-to-head and context
Davidovich Fokina won the sixth of their eight meetings and his fourth straight, after beating Hurkacz in the Chengdu ATP 250 final at the end of September. Hurkacz had won the Shanghai title in 2023 and missed the two editions that followed because of injury. Before Shanghai he withdrew from the Beijing semifinal against Alex de Minaur. Hurkacz was projected to rise to 30th in the ranking update on Monday, 19 October.
Upcoming schedule
Hurkacz's next event is the ATP 250 in Lyon, played on hard courts from 19 to 25 October. The Lyon event took over the licence from the Marseille tournament this year. The ATP 500 in Basel follows from 26 October to 1 November. The season closes with the Paris Masters from 2 to 8 November, held at La Defense Arena in Nanterre, the last ATP Masters 1000 of the 2026 season.
