Bennet Hundt leaves German champion Alba Berlin for Trier, Maik Zirbes signs two-year extension
After winning the German Bundesliga title with Alba Berlin, point guard Bennet Hundt joins Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier on a two-year deal. Veteran center Maik Zirbes also extended his contract, keeping him at the club through 2028.
Hundt's return and departure
Bennet Hundt leaves Alba Berlin, the reigning German champion, and moves to Bundesliga rival Vet-Concept Gladiators Trier. His contract in the capital had run out, and in Trier he signed a two-year deal. The 27-year-old point guard was born in Berlin and already played for Alba's youth, BBL and EuroCup teams between 2015 and 2019. After stints in Göttingen, Bamberg, Oldenburg, Heidelberg and Spain, he came back to his hometown club before the 2025–26 season, initially on a short-term deal, and ended up winning the championship.
A special season
Hundt described the past year as unforgettable.
He has earned 11 senior caps for the German national team.I am incredibly grateful that I was able to play for Alba once again this season. To be on the court for my hometown was something very special, a season I will remember forever.
Zirbes stays in a new role
Maik Zirbes, a 75-time German international, has extended his contract by two more years. The 36-year-old center trained in Trier and returned to the club three years ago after playing for several domestic and foreign teams. Head coach Jacques Schneider said Zirbes will take on a "new role" while remaining an influential figure.
He has had great influence on our success in recent years. It is very clear that he continues to be in very good physical shape and is ready to support us as a team in a new role.
Roster building in Trier
Both personnel moves were announced during the Altstadtfest in Trier. Schneider praised Hundt as a player who can operate at high pace, makes quick decisions and is very team-oriented. Trier is actively assembling its squad for the upcoming Bundesliga season.
