Hull City hold Chelsea to 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge to stay unbeaten

First-half defensive collapse

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early advantage in the seventh minute after exchanging passes with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, stepping past Regan Slater to beat Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis at the near post. Chelsea lost control twenty-one minutes later when Malo Gusto failed to prevent Ryan Giles from delivering a cross. Defender Jorrel Hato misjudged the high bounce, allowing Algerian winger Mohamed Belloumi to volley Hull level in the 28th minute. Six minutes later, Semi Ajayi headed a corner against the crossbar, and Belloumi pounced on the loose ball to score his second through a deflection past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The two strikes overturned the match and sent Hull into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

Chelsea response and second-half equaliser

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso replaced Hato at half-time and altered his defensive shape to stabilise the back line. Reece James struck the goalpost from a free-kick as the hosts pushed for an equaliser, while Martinez kept Chelsea in the contest by stopping an opportunity from Hull forward Oli McBurnie. The hosts found their equaliser in the 66th minute when Palmer recovered possession and delivered a cross for Pedro, who drilled a left-footed strike into the top corner. Palmer had a final opportunity with a 30-yard free-kick in stoppage time, which flew into the stands before referee Farai Hallam blew the final whistle.

“We had one or two good chances to get the winner, but you're still open. Not happy. We can do better. We got what we deserved.”

Contrasting defensive and attacking records

The draw maintained Chelsea's trend of high scoring paired with defensive vulnerability under Alonso. Chelsea have scored 18 goals and conceded 12 in six matches across all competitions this season, including a 6-3 League Cup victory over Leeds. In the Premier League, Alonso's side has conceded at least two goals in each of their four games, extending their winless home streak against promoted sides to five matches. Chelsea spent 349 million pounds on 11 signings during the summer transfer window while selling 17 players, yet they remain without a clean sheet in domestic league play.

Promoted side maintains unbeaten start

Promoted Hull City, managed by Sergej Jakirovic, moved into third place in the Premier League table with eight points from their opening four matches. Before conceding to Rogers, Hull had kept three consecutive clean sheets, opening their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United before winning away against Coventry and drawing with Aston Villa. Chelsea occupy fourth place with seven points, trailing Arsenal and Manchester City, who both hold nine points. Jakirovic's squad held firm through late Chelsea pressure to secure their fourth consecutive unbeaten result.
