Hull City defeat Manchester United 2-0 on Premier League opening weekend
Promoted Hull City scored twice from first-half set pieces through Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy to secure a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in their Premier League opener.
Set-piece breakthrough for the hosts
Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City on Saturday afternoon during the opening round of the Premier League season. Playing away in northeast England, the visitors fell behind during the first half after conceding twice from set pieces. Hull City, who earned promotion to the top tier after finishing in sixth place in the Championship during the previous campaign, exerted pressure early in the match. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was forced into action during the opening minutes, repelling a downward header and tipping a cross-shot over his crossbar. Hull broke through in the 17th minute following a corner kick. Although Lammens produced an initial save on his goal line, the rebound dropped directly to defender Semi Ajayi, who converted from close range to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Record signing doubles the advantage
Hull City extended their advantage twenty minutes later by punishing an infraction committed by Manchester United in their defensive third. Midfielder Youri Tielemans, making his competitive debut in the Manchester United starting lineup, conceded a free kick in front of the penalty area in the 38th minute. The set-piece delivery was directed toward defender Nobel Mendy, Hull City's record summer signing arriving from Spanish club Rayo Vallecano. Mendy rose above the defence to place a header past the Belgian goalkeeper, doubling the hosts' lead to 2-0 before half-time. In the stands, the home supporters accompanied subsequent passing sequences with mocking olé chants while directing claw gestures toward the travelling Manchester United supporters.
Second-half changes and defensive stand
Seeking a way back into the fixture, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick altered his attacking structure during the interval. Carrick introduced forward Marcus Rashford at half-time, marking the English international's first appearance in a Manchester United shirt since December 2024 after returning from a loan period. Despite the change, Manchester United struggled to find precision and incisiveness in their offensive movements against a compact Hull defense. Hull City preserved their two-goal margin through Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, another of the club's summer arrivals. Tzolakis made a key save in the 79th minute, turning aside a shot from forward Bryan Mbeumo to deny Manchester United a route back into the contest.
- Semi Ajayi scores from close range following a corner rebound
- Nobel Mendy heads in a free kick conceded by Youri Tielemans
- Marcus Rashford comes on for his first Manchester United appearance since December 2024
- Konstantinos Tzolakis saves an attempt from Bryan Mbeumo to preserve the clean sheet
Opening round context and upcoming fixtures
The defeat marked a difficult start to the domestic campaign for Manchester United, who had finished in third place in the Premier League table at the end of the previous season. Carrick gave debuts and first starts to both Tielemans and Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos in midfield, but the side was unable to recover after falling behind to the two first-half goals. Hull City secured three points in their first match back in the top flight, building on their sixth-place Championship campaign. Manchester United will return to action in the second round of the Premier League season, when they are scheduled to host another newly promoted side, Ipswich, at Old Trafford.
