Huawei launches Mate XT2 trifold smartphone at $2,980 ahead of Apple event

Huawei launched its second-generation trifold smartphone, the Mate XT2, introducing a redesigned inward folding mechanism described as wing style. Unlike its predecessor, which used an accordion fold with one screen facing outward, the new device folds both lateral wings inward over a 10.2-inch internal AMOLED display. When unfolded, the device maintains a uniform thickness of 3.5 millimetres, expanding into a 3K resolution panel with a 12.8:9 aspect ratio and a 90 Hz refresh rate. When folded, the handset measures 12.5 millimetres in thickness, weighs 299 grams, and operates via a 6.5-inch external AMOLED screen with 2,442 by 1,140 resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, and 6,500 nits of peak brightness. The outer display utilizes basalt crystal glass, which the company states provides 16 times higher scratch resistance, while the chassis carries IP58 and IP59 water-resistance ratings. An optional hardware-level privacy screen narrows viewing angles to block side visibility. Camera hardware includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 40-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 50-megapixel periscope module with 3.5x optical zoom, and an 8-megapixel internal selfie sensor.

In-house silicon and architecture

The device runs Huawei's HarmonyOS and is powered by the proprietary Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which delivers a 42% performance gain over the previous generation. The processor marks the commercial debut of Huawei's LogicFolding architecture, an approach presented in May under the Tau Scaling framework. Instead of relying solely on shrinking transistor sizes through advanced photolithography tools restricted by United States trade sanctions, LogicFolding organizes circuits into multiple vertically connected active layers. Huawei states that this vertical layout reduces signal transit times and increases transistor density while consuming less electricity. Domestic competitor Xiaomi also relies on proprietary silicon for its newly presented 18 Fold, pairing its processor with memory modules supplied by Chinese manufacturer CXMT.

Pricing tiers and product launches

Pre-orders for the Mate XT2 opened in China on 7 September 2026, with retail availability scheduled for 31 October 2026. The baseline model with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is priced at 19,999 yuan (approximately $2,980). A variant equipped with 1TB of storage and the hardware privacy display retails at 24,999 yuan (approximately $3,725), while a Collector's Edition featuring 2TB of storage costs 29,999 yuan (approximately $4,470). On the same day, Xiaomi presented the 18 Fold, a passport-sized folding handset starting at $1,540 that allows users to run three applications side by side. Both Chinese manufacturers cited severe cost pressures stemming from rising memory chip prices during their product presentations.

Market dynamics in China

The simultaneous announcements arrive two days ahead of Apple's scheduled 9 September 2026 hardware event, where industry analysts anticipate the debut of a foldable iPhone alongside standard handset updates. In the second quarter of 2026, Huawei led the overall Chinese smartphone market with a 22.6% market share, followed by Apple at 18.1% and Xiaomi at 12.4%, according to data from research firm IDC. In the domestic folding device segment, research firm Smart Analytics Global reported that Huawei accounted for 68% of all shipments during the same quarter. Huawei remains excluded from the United States retail market due to federal national security sanctions, keeping its commercial focus centered on premium buyers in China and select international territories where it competes against Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Flip8 lineups.
