SUV with Swiss plates flees after fatal scooter crash kills 17-year-old in Versilia
Just before 4 am on Saturday, a scooter carrying two young men collided with an SUV performing a U-turn on the Versilia seafront. The 17-year-old died at the scene, while his 18-year-old friend was airlifted to hospital in critical condition, and the SUV's occupants escaped on foot.
What happened
The crash occurred on viale Roma, the coastal road straddling the boundary between Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, near the Twiga nightclub. A scooter with two people aboard struck an SUV that, according to initial reports, was making a U-turn. The SUV bore Swiss licence plates.
The 17-year-old victim died instantly. The 18-year-old passenger was transported by Pegaso 3 helicopter to Cisanello hospital in Pisa, where he remains in a critical condition.
The aftermath
After the collision, the SUV's occupants, reportedly three individuals, fled on foot, vanishing before police arrived. Carabinieri sealed off the seafront to conduct surveys and launched a search for the hit-and-run drivers. Emergency medical staff, including an ambulance and a medical car from Querceta, could only confirm the teenager's death.
Investigation
Authorities are working to identify the SUV's occupants and reconstruct the exact sequence of events. The Swiss registration number is a key lead. The viale a mare was blocked for an extended period while officers gathered evidence. No arrests have been reported so far, and the cause of the crash remains under examination.
