Search operations face severe conditions
A glacier collapse near the high-altitude China-Nepal border sent a torrent of water, ice, mud, and debris through mountain valleys on Wednesday, 26 August. By Saturday, 29 August, emergency authorities confirmed 683 fatalities across the region, comprising 675 deaths in northern Nepal and seven in Tibet. Search units composed of thousands of military, civilian police, and Armed Police Force personnel deployed helicopters to reach isolated valleys where road access was severed. Adverse weather, heavy rain, thick fog, and fears that an upstream dammed lake might overflow forced authorities to temporarily suspend rescue efforts on Saturday.
Approximately 3,000 people remain missing across the Himalayas, including 2,426 individuals on the Nepalese side and roughly 500 in Tibet. Chinese officials stated that 260 foreigners were among the missing in Tibet, while Nepal's missing registry includes citizens from over 30 countries, including three Portuguese nationals. Rescuers evacuated 184 foreign tourists alive through the Nepal Tourism Board, while specialist teams attempted to reach hundreds of industrial workers feared trapped in flooded hydroelectric tunnels.

Forensic crisis and reconstruction appeals
Emergency workers faced mounting difficulties as thick river mud hardened over submerged structures. Three days after the disaster, morgues reached capacity and recovered bodies began to decompose, forcing authorities to take DNA samples before burying unidentified victims in community forest plots. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal requested international aid for refrigerated mortuary facilities, DNA identification equipment, and life-detection technology capable of locating survivors beneath debris.

Khanal estimated that long-term recovery and infrastructure reconstruction will require several billion dollars following detailed damage evaluations. Several international partners announced initial emergency funding packages to assist relief operations on the ground. These pledges included €2 million from the European Union, £5 million (€5.8 million) from the United Kingdom, and 5 million Canadian dollars (€3.1 million) from Canada.

Bilateral cooperation and climate vulnerability
The United States Geological Survey confirmed that the catastrophe originated from a high-altitude glacier failure. Himalayan glaciers supply water to approximately two billion people, but melting rates have doubled since 2000 according to a study by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development cited by environmental correspondent Navin Singh Khadka. Following telephone discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Khanal announced that Nepal and China will establish a joint mechanism to study glacial hazards and share real-time hydrological data. Wang confirmed that China had transmitted satellite imagery, hydrological readings, and early warnings regarding upstream dammed lakes.
Addressing reporters in Kathmandu on Saturday, Khanal urged global action to protect the Himalayan ecosystem. He pointed to the stark contrast between the country's minimal emissions and its severe exposure to global warming hazards. The minister called on the international community to unite to safeguard vulnerable mountain populations.
