From rooftop pools in Frankfurt to sandy Rhine banks in Wiesbaden, Hessen's beach clubs are kicking off the summer season with cocktails, palm trees, and a promise of holiday atmosphere close to home.
With summer arriving, beach club season in the German state of Hessen is officially underway. Across the region, from north to south, venues are offering sand, sun, and cool drinks, providing a local holiday escape. The offerings range from active leisure complexes to relaxed riverside bars and exclusive rooftop pools.
Northern escapes and active leisure
In Kassel, the Ahoi Biergarten on the banks of the Fulda river offers relaxed dining and drinks on hot days. For the more active, visitors can jump directly into the Fulda or rent a pedalo, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard from the on-site boat rental. The StrandBar in Kassel provides a sandy beach, Mediterranean food, and cool drinks right on the Buga-See, a lake created for the 1981 Federal Garden Show, located in a nature reserve near the city center. Further north in Korbach, the Laolo Sport- und Funpark's beach bar promises a holiday atmosphere under palm trees, with the wider facility offering adventure golf, padel tennis, football, and disc golf for all ages.
Rooftop retreats in Frankfurt
Frankfurt's beach experience heads for the rooftops rather than the river. The Citybeach club offers a pool and daybeds with cold drinks, though the outing can quickly become expensive. Entry costs five euros, and there is a minimum spend per person of 20 or 25 euros, depending on the reservation. For those seeking a bigger party, the Gateway Gardens Ocean Club describes itself as a relaxed beach club during the week and a wild open-air club on weekends.
Riverside relaxation in the south
In the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kastel, the Kasteler Strand area allows guests to chill under parasols with their feet in the light sand directly on the Rhine riverbank. The area belongs to the Bastion von Schönborn restaurant next door, and the operator advertises the strand with "the most beautiful view of Mainz." Bringing your own drinks, snacks, or beach furniture is not permitted, but there is no mandatory consumption. Dogs are allowed if kept on a leash.
Sun and gastronomy in Fulda and Darmstadt
The Pier 36 in Fulda is located directly on the water at the Aueweiher lake, offering a holiday atmosphere on the grounds of an old glider hangar. Its menu includes burgers made from local Wagyu cattle as well as vegetarian alternatives. In Darmstadt, the Beachclub Achtzehn98, situated next to the Merck-Stadion, features a fine sandy beach, palm trees, and raffia umbrellas. The menu lists cocktails, vegetarian and vegan bowls, steaks, and pasta, while beach parties with DJs and live musicians regularly invite guests to celebrate and dance.
Gießen's lakeside spot
Visitors to the Strandbar am Neuen Teich in Gießen can enjoy sun, glittering water, and a relaxed atmosphere. The spacious bar, with around 300 seats, serves burgers, bowls, and "Loaded Fries" alongside trendy drinks.
