Fire destroys Henstedt-Ulzburg farm in Schleswig-Holstein, killing 30 calves
A fire destroyed a barn and a thatched-roof house in Henstedt-Ulzburg overnight, killing 30 calves and injuring four civilians and two firefighters.
Initial outbreak in Henstedt-Ulzburg
A fire broke out at an agricultural property in Henstedt-Ulzburg, a municipality in the Segeberg district of Schleswig-Holstein, during the late evening of Thursday, 1 October 2026. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Henstedt-Ulzburg received an initial emergency call alerting crews to a blaze in a barn structure on the farmstead. When the first emergency units arrived at the scene, they found both the agricultural barn and an immediately adjacent thatched-roof residential building already fully engulfed in flames. The fire spread rapidly through the traditional thatched roof and adjoining timber framing, compromising both structures before crews could initiate defensive measures.
Multi-brigade containment and debris clearance
Emergency commanders escalated the response level to bring in regional reinforcements as the fire threatened the entire farm complex. Additional volunteer fire crews dispatched to the site included teams from the nearby towns of Kaltenkirchen, Alveslohe, and Ellerau, alongside technical personnel from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW). At the peak of the overnight operation, around 130 emergency personnel worked at the scene to control the blaze and protect surrounding areas. Firefighting and dampening operations continued through the night and into the morning hours of Friday, 2 October 2026. Heavy construction machinery, including an excavator, was brought onto the site to tear down unstable building sections and clear charred debris, enabling emergency crews to reach and extinguish deep-seated ember nests.

Livestock losses and human casualties
The fire resulted in the deaths of 30 calves housed in the stable facility. Early police updates issued during the night had reported that approximately 100 calves had perished, but fire service officials revised the toll down to 30 following a detailed inspection of the site. Firefighters rescued two individuals directly from the burning residential building. Four people sustained minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, and were taken by emergency services to local hospitals. Some of the injured individuals had entered the burning stable prior to the arrival of the fire department in an effort to evacuate livestock. Additionally, two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze and received outpatient medical treatment directly at the scene.
Damage scale and investigation status
Both the agricultural barn and the adjoining thatched-roof residence burned down completely during the overnight incident. Police authorities and emergency officials estimate the property damage to be in the millions of euros. Fire crews remained on the scene on Friday morning to monitor residual hotspots while structural dismantling continued. The cause of the fire remains unknown, with local police and fire investigators yet to establish how the initial blaze began in the barn.
