Chelsea sign 36-year-old Jordan Henderson on free transfer, two-year deal through 2028

The deal

Chelsea have signed England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Monday. The 36-year-old joins on a free transfer after his contract with Brentford ended, where he made 34 appearances last season and recorded one goal and three assists. The deal runs until June 2028.

Henderson is the second English player brought in by new manager Xabi Alonso this transfer window, following the record acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The move also reunites Henderson with former England teammate Danny Welbeck, whose signing was confirmed by the club a day earlier.

Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn't turn down.

Henderson added that he was impressed by the ownership's ambition. "I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction," he said in the club statement. "For me, it's about giving everything every day, on and off the pitch, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible."

Career path

Henderson came through Sunderland's academy and made his professional debut in 2008 before joining Liverpool in 2011. Over 12 seasons at Anfield he made 492 appearances in all competitions and captained the side to the Champions League title in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020, the club's first league championship in 30 years. He lifted eight major trophies with Liverpool, including the FA Cup, League Cups, Super Cups and the Club World Cup.

In 2023 he left Liverpool for Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, but departed after six months to join Ajax Amsterdam. At Ajax he was the highest earner in the squad with an estimated salary of 4.5 million euros, a figure that weighed heavily on the Amsterdam club's budget during a period of cost-cutting, leading to his free-transfer departure. He returned to the Premier League with Brentford last season, finishing ninth in the table.

International career

Henderson has earned 90 or 91 caps for England, depending on the source. He was part of the squad that finished runners-up at Euro 2020 and was selected by Thomas Tuchel for the 2026 World Cup. His tournament was cut short when he suffered a broken arm after falling over an advertising board while celebrating England's last-16 victory over Mexico. He had played six minutes against Panama in the group stage and seven minutes total in the competition. England were eliminated by Argentina in the semi-finals (1-2) but defeated France 6-4 in the third-place match.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and begin the new campaign at local rivals Fulham on August 24. Henderson brings 463 Premier League appearances of experience to a midfield now under Alonso, who was appointed head coach in May.
