Fifth-tier HEBC Hamburg hosts Borussia Dortmund in DFB-Pokal before over 41,600 fans

Fifth-tier side Hamburg-Eimsbuetteler Ballspiel-Club faces Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening at 20:45 in the opening round of the DFB-Pokal. The match takes place at the Volksparkstadion, with live broadcasts scheduled on RTL and Sky. By Monday midday, ticket sales surpassed 41,600 seats, exceeding the previous German fifth-tier first-round benchmark of 41,500 spectators set on 10 August 2019 when Atlas Delmenhorst played Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion. The local transport operator Hamburger Hochbahn provided HEBC with a dedicated bus for the trip from Eimsbuettel to Bahrenfeld. If the amateur side achieves an upset, the squad will receive ice cream rather than financial bonuses.

Club background and qualification path

Founded in 1911 under the name Sportclub Elbe, HEBC counts 818 members, placing it 111th among sports clubs registered with the Hamburg Sports Federation. The purple-and-white club usually hosts matches on Sunday mornings at 10:45 before roughly 250 spectators at the Professor-Reinmueller-Platz artificial turf pitch. HEBC qualified for the national cup on 23 May by defeating Vorwaerts Wacker 5-1 in the Hamburg State Cup final, reaching their first local final since 1983. In the current Oberliga Hamburg campaign, coach Philipp Obloch's team occupies 13th place with two wins and three losses, following a 0-1 league defeat against Vorwaerts Wacker on Friday.

Squad preparation and former players

Training attendance remained unusually high in the days leading up to the cup tie, with players adjusting standard holiday plans to prepare for the professional opposition. Captain Janek Wrede, who works in the scouting department at Hamburger SV, leads the defensive unit against Dortmund. League manager Stilianos Vamvakidis, who shares operational duties with Eduardo Avarello and approaches 40 years of service at the club, described the mindset of the squad ahead of kickoff.

Former Werder Bremen player Thomas Wolter, who played for HEBC before moving to the Bundesliga in 1984, will attend the match alongside his teammates from the 1983 squad.

I bought two tickets for the match and will be in the stadium with my 1983 team. We always meet twice a year.

Wider tournament landscape

Thirty teams have secured berths in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, including 16 Bundesliga clubs, 11 teams from the 2. Bundesliga, and three lower-tier sides. Rot-Weiss Essen progressed with a 2-0 victory over FC St. Pauli, SSV Jeddeloh II eliminated 1. FC Heidenheim 5-2, and SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach defeated Arminia Bielefeld on penalties. If Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich win their respective fixtures against HEBC and VfL Osnabrueck, all 18 top-tier clubs will advance to the second round for the first time since the 2008–2009 season. The draw for the 32 remaining teams will take place on Saturday at 17:45 during the ARD Sportschau broadcast from the German Football Museum in Dortmund.
