Repeated summer heatwaves across Spain are changing domestic holiday habits, redistributing tourist spending to northern regions, and lowering worked hours.

In response to prolonged daytime heat, local populations in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona have adjusted daily routines, moving outdoor activity past 20:45 or booking urban hotel stays with air conditioning. National Tourism Observatory data shows that 35% of Spaniards chose August for their holidays in 2025, down from 38% in 2024, with travelers postponing trips to September.

Macroeconomic costs and labor disruptions
The broader European economic framework faces direct pressure from rising heat levels. A study in Nature Communications calculated that European heatwaves generated economic losses between 0.3% and 0.5% of gross domestic product, transmitting disruptions through supply chains and production schedules. The International Labour Organization estimates that heat stress will eliminate 2.2% of global worked hours by 2030. Economists note that physical infrastructure undergoes accelerated depreciation under extreme conditions, while lower water levels on shipping corridors such as the Rhine River reduce vessel cargo capacities and raise transportation costs. Long-term climatic projections for Southern Europe
