DWD issues heat warning for southern Germany as temperatures near 36°C on Sunday
The German Weather Service has issued a heat warning effective from 11:00 on Sunday for Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate, with temperatures reaching around 35°C in the south and up to 36°C in Hesse.
DWD issues heat warning for Sunday
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a heat warning for parts of southern Germany, effective from 11:00 on Sunday, 9 August. The warning covers areas in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate. The DWD cautions that the heat load could become dangerous for people and lead to health problems, advising residents to take precautions.
The DWD's guidance was direct.
Avoid the heat if possible, drink enough water and keep indoor spaces cool.
Temperature forecast for the weekend
According to the forecast, Sunday will be widely hot across Germany. In southern Germany, temperatures around 35°C will make it very hot in places. Only the extreme northwest will not exceed the 30°C mark. In Hesse specifically, maximum temperatures on Sunday will climb to between 32 and 36°C, with fair and partly sunny conditions. A weak to moderate wind is expected, with gusts possible near any showers.
Saturday in Hesse saw sunshine and temperatures of 28 to 32°C. Overnight into Sunday, temperatures will drop to between 18 and 14°C in the south and between 16 and 12°C in the north, providing some overnight relief before the heat builds again.
The DWD expects predominantly fair weather on Sunday, though clouds may build during the day.
In addition, cumulus clouds will form preferentially over the mountainous regions in the southwest, which will occasionally bring showers or even a thunderstorm.
In the evening, isolated showers are possible in mountainous areas.

Outlook for the coming week
No significant cooling is in sight. The forecast indicates that while Tuesday and Wednesday will see a temporary dip in the temperature curve, it will have only minor effects in southern Germany. In the second half of the week, warmer air masses will again push into northern Germany. In the southwest, temperatures could once again exceed 35°C.
Monday will start the new week fair to sunny and mostly dry, with temperatures between 29 and 34°C, reaching up to 36°C in the south. Overnight into Monday, the DWD notes a low probability of isolated showers or thunderstorms with gusty winds and heavy rain, with temperatures dropping to between 19 and 14°C.
In the far north, some rain can be hoped for at the start of the week, with temperatures remaining below 25°C. Further south, up to the low mountain threshold, it will still reach a summer day between 25 and 30°C, even if cloud fields occasionally drift across the sky.
