Yannick Hanfmann edges Kamil Majchrzak in three tie-break Shanghai opener
Germany's Yannick Hanfmann defeated Poland's Kamil Majchrzak in a three-set opening-round match at the ATP tournament in Shanghai, with every set decided by a tie-break.
In their first career meeting at an ATP event, world number 57 Yannick Hanfmann defeated 70th-ranked Kamil Majchrzak 6:7 (4-7), 7:6 (7-3), 7:6 (9-7) in the first round of the Shanghai tournament. Neither player dropped serve across all 36 games, sending every set to a tie-break. Majchrzak secured the opening set tie-break after winning five consecutive points. Hanfmann leveled the contest in the second set, building an early 4-1 lead in the tie-break before closing it out.
The deciding tie-break stood tied at 5-5 after ten points. Hanfmann moved ahead to create match points, and while Majchrzak saved two of them, Hanfmann converted his third opportunity to take the set 9-7 and finish the match. In other tournament action, Poland's Hubert Hurkacz is scheduled to begin his campaign on Thursday against Australia's James Duckworth, with the winner advancing to face Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the second round.
