Hamburg outdoor pools see mixed season, eye above-average turnout after hot June week
Hamburg's outdoor swimming pools have had a changeable season so far, operator Bäderland reports, but a hot week in late June could make it the first above-average season in years if weather cooperates through September.
A changeable season
Hamburg's outdoor swimming pools have experienced a mixed season so far in 2026, according to operator Bäderland, which shared the assessment in response to an inquiry from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa). Exact visitor numbers are not yet available. Spokesperson Michael Dietel noted that the past several years had been difficult for the outdoor pool business due to poor weather, describing them as "very poor." However, a hot week at the end of June changed the trajectory, and Dietel said it could produce the first above-average season in a long time.

Holiday emptiness keeps queues short
Summer holidays in Hamburg run until 19 August, and the effect on the city is noticeable. Dietel observed that Hamburg feels emptier during the holidays, something visible in traffic and elsewhere. Even when temperatures climbed above 30 degrees during the holiday period, the pools did not see long waiting times or queues, a contrast with what might be expected on hot days outside the school break. The combination of warm weather and a reduced city population has created what Dietel described as a relaxed atmosphere at the facilities.
Pool party premiere at Kaifu-Bad
On 14 August, Bäderland will host its first-ever pool party at the Kaifu-Bad facility. The event promises DJ sounds, good atmosphere in and around the water, and what the operator called "plenty of summer feeling" in a promotional announcement. One of the highlights is a cannonball diving contest from the 5-meter board, for which participants must be at least 18 years old. Dietel said it would be the first such event for Bäderland and the only one planned this year.
The outdoor pool business is always very weather-dependent, the guests know that too. And weather forecasts have recently not been reliable even a week in advance.
No fixed end date
There is no set date for the end of the outdoor pool season. Dietel explained that if persistent rain sets in around mid-August, the operator will close the outdoor pools. If the weather stays fine through mid-September, they will remain open. However, demand typically drops once the holiday period ends, as many people have had their fill of sun during vacations and are occupied again with school and work. The season's final shape will depend on conditions in the coming weeks, with the Kaifu-Bad pool party on 14 August serving as a late-season highlight before the usual decline in attendance.
