Erling Haaland asks to be substituted for Norway due to heavy fixture fatigue
Norway striker Erling Haaland asked to come off during a 2-1 loss to Portugal after playing four matches in ten days, prompting concerns over player workload ahead of Manchester City's weekend fixture against Liverpool.
Substitution in Porto
Erling Haaland asked to be replaced after 67 minutes of Norway's 2-1 defeat to Portugal at the Estadio do Dragao on Sunday. The 26-year-old Manchester City striker gestured to the Norway bench while the score was level and was substituted for Jorgen Strand Larsen. Haaland appeared to limp on the pitch before coming off, but he sat on the substitutes' bench rather than heading to the dressing room for examination. Norway defender Leo Ostigard observed after the match that Haaland plays an extraordinary volume of football and needs rest like any other player. When asked by Norwegian broadcaster TV2 about the congested international calendar, Haaland remarked that the schedule is difficult to manage.
Solbakken and teammates address fatigue
Norway manager Stale Solbakken clarified that the substitution was pre-planned to manage extreme fatigue rather than a new injury. Solbakken revealed that he held a private conversation with Haaland on Saturday after seeing the forward look exhausted during Thursday's defeat to Wales. The coaching staff had hoped Haaland could manage 60 minutes as the focal point in attack after starting all four matches in Norway's ten-day Nations League window. Solbakken noted that several squad members, including Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard and Fulham midfielder Sander Berge, are physically drained. Odegaard played the full duration of all four matches during the break and took a heavy tackle from Bernardo Silva in the previous match against Portugal on September 27.
Some of my players have only had six or seven days of holiday. And you do not live off your physical condition in a normal job. Then it is straight into the start of the season, followed by a mini-tournament, so it is an extreme strain.
Player union demands structural reforms
Immediately after the match, Haaland, Odegaard, and Berge departed Porto on a private jet to maximize a short break before domestic action resumes. The match congestion prompted the Norwegian players' union, NISO, to issue a statement demanding formal limits on fixture density, travel strain, and recovery periods. NISO chief Kristoffer Vatshaug warned that the heavy workload has already caused physical consequences across the sport. Vatshaug insisted that governing bodies must establish enforceable rest regulations rather than forcing players to decline appearances for their clubs or national teams. Haaland had previously posted about the tight calendar after scoring two goals in a 3-2 win against Denmark, noting on social media that his next kickoff was only 70 hours away.
We want clearer guidelines for workload and recovery. It is about the time between matches, consecutive rest periods, travel strain and how much time players get to recover after a long season.
Return to Manchester City
Haaland enters the upcoming domestic round with five Premier League goals this season and a national record of 65 goals in 59 matches for Norway. He did not score against Wales or Portugal, which were the two matches Norway played following the publication of the independent commission verdict against Manchester City. The commission found City guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, including the use of sham contracts, a ruling the club has appealed. City medical staff will evaluate Haaland ahead of Sunday's league match against Liverpool at Anfield, where he remains the only senior out-and-out striker in Manchester City's squad.
