Sweden to Deploy Gripen Fighter Jets to Guard Polish Airspace for Two Months
Swedish Gripen fighters will begin a two-month patrol mission over Poland in October 2026 to protect NATO airspace and logistics routes aiding Ukraine.
Mission parameters and operational command
Swedish JAS Gripen fighter jets will deploy in October 2026 to protect NATO airspace over Poland under an allied mission scheduled to run for two months. The Swedish Armed Forces will stage the aircraft primarily from an air base in the Blekinge region in southeastern Sweden, while maintaining a small operational detachment on Polish soil. Throughout the deployment, participating Swedish pilots and ground crews will operate under the tactical command of the NATO Combined Air Operations Centre located in Uedem, Germany.
Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson stated that the deployment responds to a difficult regional security environment and repeated violations of NATO sovereign airspace. The operational objectives focus on reinforcing NATO integrated air and missile defence system and maintaining surveillance across the alliance's eastern flank.
- Sweden joins NATO as the alliance's 32nd member state.
- Swedish Gripen fighters patrol Polish airspace from Malbork air base under NATO Air Policing.
- Polish Defence Ministry decorates Swedish Air Force personnel at the embassy in Stockholm.
- Swedish parliamentary elections are held, leading Ulf Kristersson to assume a caretaker role.

Protection for Ukraine logistics corridors
A core objective of the two-month aerial deployment is securing the logistics hub in southeastern Poland near Rzeszów, which handles military and humanitarian consignments destined for Ukraine. Swedish officials stated that the Gripen detachments will provide continuous overhead protection to ensure supply lines remain uninterrupted.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard defined the supply corridor through Poland as an indispensable component of collective support for Ukrainian defence.
Swedish and Euro-Atlantic security is built together with our allies. By providing Gripens, we contribute to the defence of NATO and allied airspace along the eastern flank, strengthen the security of Sweden and our allies, and secure further support for Ukraine, which is the overriding objective of our foreign policy. Poland is a key link in the supply chain of aid to Ukraine and the Swedish contribution shows that we are prepared to take responsibility for security in our neighbourhood.
Alliance background and bilateral cooperation
The mission represents Sweden's second aerial deployment over Poland since joining NATO as its 32nd member state in 2024. Between April and August 2025, Swedish Gripen fighters operated out of Malbork air base in northern Poland under NATO Air Policing, where they conducted patrols and guarded the Rzeszów transit corridor. In early September 2026, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz awarded Polish Army Medals in gold, silver, and bronze to dozens of Swedish pilots, technicians, and commanders at the Polish Embassy in Stockholm for their service during the Malbork rotation.
Swedish Acting Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who stepped down after the 13 September 2026 parliamentary election and continues to serve in a caretaker role, noted that Stockholm has prioritised Nordic-Baltic and Polish defence coordination over the past four years.
Over the past four years, we have prioritised cooperation with the Nordic and Baltic states and with Poland. For the second time, Swedish fighter jets will take part in airspace surveillance over Poland and the protection of NATO airspace and ensuring the delivery of crucial support to Ukraine. Along with our friends and allies in NATO, we strengthen the security of Sweden, Europe and NATO.
The Swedish government confirmed that allied collaboration remains central to national defence policy as Sweden integrates its air capabilities into NATO command structures.
