Rupert Grint to reprise Ron Weasley role in Broadway production of Cursed Child

Broadway return announced

Rupert Grint will return to the role of Ron Weasley for a 17-week Broadway engagement in the stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The 38-year-old British actor portrayed the character across all eight film adaptations released between 2001 and 2011, having first been cast at age 11. Grint will take over the adult version of Ron Weasley at the Lyric Theatre in New York, with performances running from 2 February 2027 to 30 May 2027. Advance ticket sales for the 17-week engagement open on 1 September 2026. Grint announced the casting on Wednesday through a video distributed across the production's social channels, writing that he was dusting off his old robes for New York.

In an official statement released alongside the casting announcement, Grint reflected on returning to the character as a parent:

Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can't wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron's shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting.

Cast transitions at the Lyric Theatre

Grint is the second original film cast member to join the Broadway production, following Tom Felton, who currently portrays adult Draco Malfoy at the Lyric Theatre. Felton joined the New York company in November, contributing to increased attendance and box office revenue, and is scheduled to conclude his stage run on 3 January 2027. Because Felton departs a month before Grint begins performances, the two original film actors will not appear onstage together. The stage play is set 19 years after the conclusion of the core story, following Harry, Ron, and Hermione Granger as adults whose children attend Hogwarts.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender issued a joint statement on Grint's return to the narrative universe:

Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past. He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End.

Commercial scale and career context

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in London in 2016 and has sold more than 14 million tickets across its global productions. In New York, the production at the Lyric Theatre has grossed over $532 million at the box office. The stage return coincides with the 25th anniversary of the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which originally released when Grint was 12 years old. Grint previously made his Broadway debut in 2014, starring in Terrence McNally's comedy It's Only a Play alongside Nathan Lane. His other post-franchise credits include the television series Servant, Sick Note, and Snatch, as well as the films Knock at the Cabin, Nightborn, and Charlie Countryman. He is scheduled to appear as Bob Cratchit alongside Johnny Depp in the film Ebenezer, releasing on 13 November 2026.
