Dispute over healthcare platform categories

Former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras publicly attacked the government over gender classification options in the state health insurer platform. The system, run by the National Organization for the Provision of Health Services (EOPYY) for the home delivery of high-cost medication, included the options "Male", "Female", "Other", and "Indeterminate". Samaras characterized these categories as a conscious ideological concession by the ruling New Democracy administration.

It is the same woke agenda that has already passed into the state administration and is now being written in school textbooks. This is a conscious government choice.

Samaras added that Greece faces demographic decline and argued that family policy requires support rather than redefinition. He stated that the ideological mutation of the ruling party contradicts the values of the majority of the Greek public.

Health ministry and government response

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis responded swiftly to the former prime minister, explaining that the issue stemmed from a technical implementation standard rather than government policy. Georgiadis stated that he had already instructed the contractor to restrict the platform to two biological sex options after seeing a front-page article in the newspaper Estia earlier that morning. Georgiadis attributed Samaras' reaction to an effort to establish a rival political party ahead of general elections.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis also addressed the controversy during an appearance on Mega channel, addressing concerns among the conservative base. He insisted that genders remain strictly two and affirmed that no public administration form asks citizens for terms like Parent 1 or Parent 2.

Technical standards and previous administration

Alternate Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki clarified the technical framework behind the software implementation in a social media statement. She noted that the platform used the ISO/IEC 5218 standard, an international data processing protocol that assigns numerical values to categorical variables for statistical software such as SPSS. Under this coding scheme, zero represents unknown, one represents male, two represents female, and three represents not applicable or indeterminate. Agapidaki emphasized that the platform exists to facilitate home delivery of expensive treatments to vulnerable patients, describing the logistical service as social justice.

The debate broadened when Giorgos Mouroutis, who served as press office director during Samaras' premiership between 2012 and 2014, commented on the controversy. Speaking to One Channel, Mouroutis stated that the exact same ISO-based classifications of "Male", "Female", and "Other" operated within EOPYY during Samaras' tenure. Mouroutis argued that Samaras weakened his own governing record by portraying an established technical standard as a recent ideological shift.

Political friction on the conservative flank

The public dispute erupted five days ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair, where Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivers his annual economic keynote. Tensions between the current government and Samaras have intensified following previous criticisms from Samaras' camp, which described the modern New Democracy party as an amalgamation of former centrist PASOK figures and right-wing LAOS politicians. Opposition parties also joined the exchanges, with the right-wing Greek Solution party issuing a statement that mocked the clash between Georgiadis and his former political mentor.
