Greek government blocks SYRIZA nominee Elena Akrita for Parliament vice president, triggering opposition backlash

Parliamentary deadlock over nomination

A procedural vote in the Hellenic Parliament has escalated into a direct political confrontation between Greece's ruling New Democracy party and the opposition. The dispute centers on the vacant seat of the 5th Vice President of the Parliament, a position allocated to SYRIZA following the departure of MP Olga Gerovasili. SYRIZA selected MP Elena Akrita as its candidate for the role. New Democracy announced it would refuse to vote in favor of Akrita, breaking a longstanding parliamentary custom where democratic parties traditionally back each other's nominees. Opposition lawmakers warned that breaching this unwritten rule threatens parliamentary functionality by allowing the majority to veto opposition appointments.

Government allegations and legal threats

Government officials initially cited Akrita's political rhetoric and alleged toxicity as the rationale for blocking her appointment. During a television appearance on 28 August 2026 on Open TV, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis linked Akrita to the polarized protest movements of the post-2010 financial crisis. Marinakis accused her of using extreme language and promoting hostility during the anti-austerity demonstrations. Akrita rejected the accusations and announced she would initiate legal proceedings against Marinakis unless he issued a public retraction. She challenged the spokesperson to present any article from her writings in Ta Nea or News247, or any online post, where she advocated violence.

Opposition pushback and procedural concerns

SYRIZA representatives pointed out that Akrita is currently involved in a legal dispute with Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotaki, the wife of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. They argued that personal litigation involving an individual without an official institutional role should not dictate parliamentary proceedings. SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis criticized the ruling party for treating political opposition as grounds for exclusion.

PASOK spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas also criticized the government's approach on the afternoon of 28 August 2026. Tsoukalas argued that leaving the vice presidency unfilled reduces the total size of the parliamentary presidium by one member. According to Tsoukalas, this reduction mathematically increases New Democracy's majority in the Conference of Presidents, a key body that appoints heads of independent administrative authorities.

Clash between New Democracy and PASOK

The controversy broadened into a bitter exchange between New Democracy and PASOK after the socialist party decided to vote for Akrita based on institutional precedent. Marinakis criticized PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, contrasting PASOK's support for Akrita with its refusal to vote for Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras months earlier. Government representatives, including New Democracy spokesperson Alexandra Sdoukou, accused PASOK of aligning with political extremes from the 2015 referendum era. PASOK replied that New Democracy was displaying institutional arrogance and attempting to dictate how opposition parties vote. As all other opposition parties maintained their commitment to parliamentary convention, the governing party remained isolated in its rejection of the nomination.
