Greece beats Northern Ireland 1-0 but heads to Euro U21 playoffs on goal difference

Match action in Northern Ireland
Greece Under-21 concluded their qualifying group campaign with a 1-0 away victory over Northern Ireland on 6 October 2026. The opening 20 minutes passed without clear scoring chances as both sides contested possession in midfield. Northern Ireland generated the first significant attempt in the 28th minute, when Graham met a delivery from the right side and sent his strike just over the crossbar. Greece responded four minutes later to open the scoring. In the 32nd minute, Allen swung in a corner kick from the right, finding Anestis Mythou, who directed a header at the near post past goalkeeper Gracie, clipping the woodwork before crossing the line. Greece sought to double the margin before the interval, but a 38th-minute shot from Djurgarden midfielder Almyras deflected off a defender for a corner.
Second-half pressure and missed opportunities
Head coach Taousianis introduced tactical changes at halftime, bringing on Apostolakis for Bakoulas and Bregou for Papakanellos to maintain attacking momentum. Ten minutes into the second half, Apostolakis released Panetolikos midfielder Bregou with a through ball into the penalty area, but Gracie reacted quickly to collect the ball. Greece generated further attempts as Almyras saw another deflected effort drift narrowly wide of the post in the 64th minute. Taousianis added Rallis in place of goalscorer Mythou in the 74th minute and introduced Theodossoulakis for Allen in the 84th minute. Greece came close in the 83rd minute when Kaloskamis fired just wide from an advantageous position. In the second minute of stoppage time, Pneumonidis delivered a pass that sent Theodossoulakis clean through on goal, but the forward could not beat the goalkeeper in the one-on-one encounter.

Playoff draw format and finals schedule
Greece now joins the eight best group runners-up in a two-legged playoff stage to decide the final four berths for the tournament. The official draw for the playoff pairings will take place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday, 9 October 2026, at 12:00 Greek time.
The playoff matches are scheduled to take place during the international window on 9 November and 17 November 2026. The four aggregate winners from those ties will advance to the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals, which will take place in Albania and Serbia during the summer of 2027.
