Greek health ministry unveils AI tool to audit 245,000 private medical practices
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced a new artificial intelligence tool to monitor private clinics following the death of Giorgos Mazonakis at a Kolonaki facility.
Greek Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis presented a new artificial intelligence system on 18 September 2026 to inspect private medical practices across Greece. The initiative was unveiled during an emergency press conference at the Ministry of Health alongside Matina Pagoni, president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, and Giorgos Patoulis, president of the Athens Medical Association.
The system was introduced following revelations regarding the death of Giorgos Mazonakis at a clinic in Kolonaki, which drew scrutiny toward past oversight by medical associations. According to Georgiadis, systematic manual inspections of Greece's 245,000 private medical practices are practically impossible. Under the new setup, the platform will allow citizens to verify at any time whether a practice holds a valid license and what specific treatments it is authorized to perform, targeting unlicensed practitioners who advertise unapproved therapies.
