Greece cuts military service to nine months for 18-year-olds enlisting in late August 2026
Under Law 5265/2026, Greek conscripts born between 1 January and 15 May 2008 can complete their army service in nine months instead of twelve if they enlist during the 2026 C series from 31 August to 4 September without taking a deferment.
Early enlistment incentive under Law 5265/2026
The Greek military recruitment authority (Stratologia) has detailed the application of Law 5265/2026, introducing a reduced military service term for eligible 18-year-old conscripts. Men born between 1 January 2008 and 15 May 2008 who are summoned under the 2026 C series (2026 C' ESSO) can complete their service in nine months rather than the standard twelve. This provision, enacted under Article 246 of the statute, targets soldiers with a full primary military obligation who answer their initial class summons. The reduction of three months functions as a statutory incentive for citizens to fulfill their military duties immediately after finishing secondary education. Standard service across the Hellenic Army has stood at twelve months since the introduction of the 2026 A series, with reductions restricted to narrow statutory exemptions.

Enlistment timetable for the 2026 C series
The Hellenic National Defence General Staff scheduled the reporting period for the 2026 C series to run from Monday, 31 August, to Friday, 4 September 2026. Conscripts assigned to class 2029 must present themselves at designated army reception centres during this five-day mobilization window. Recruits who choose not to defer their service will receive a definitive discharge after nine months of actual service. Conscripts who opt to postpone their enlistment or fail to report during the August and September intake lose their eligibility for the nine-month term and revert to standard obligations. The recruitment service issued official instructions on 19 August to inform families and inductees about the new legal options.

Streamlined deferment process for prospective students
Law 5265/2026 also establishes a revised procedure for conscripts who intend to pursue university education in Greece. Under Article 188 of the law, candidates who participated in the Panhellenic Examinations and qualified for higher education entry can obtain a deferment before finishing formal university registration. Previous rules required individuals to wait until university admissions offices opened their annual matriculation rosters before confirming draft postponements. Under the new protocol, applicants need only supply supporting documents demonstrating their right to participate in the admissions or enrollment process.
The identification of applicants is carried out using personal Taxisnet codes. Users can submit an application and supporting documents for a draft deferment as candidate students of a higher or tertiary educational institution by selecting the specific field.
Digital submission and administrative assistance
Conscripts applying for education deferments must submit their requests through the official portal of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff Legal Corps at stratologia.gr. The platform authenticates applicants through the state Taxisnet tax portal and provides specific electronic forms for educational postponements. Stratologia announced that information leaflets and technical forms are accessible at the online directory stratologia.gr/el/entipa. Individuals who require in-person assistance can process their claims through local Citizens' Service Centres (KEP) or regional military recruitment offices across Greece. These administrative offices process verification records to ensure draft records reflect student status before enlistment begins on 31 August.
