Flash flood kills two in Grand Canyon as search continues for missing hiker
Two Texas hikers died and a third remains missing after a torrential flash flood swept through Bright Angel Canyon, prompting 82 helicopter rescues and indefinite lodging closures.
Flash flood sweeps through Bright Angel Canyon
On Saturday, 29 August 2026, fast-moving monsoon thunderstorms dumped just over an inch of rain in 30 minutes over Bright Angel Canyon between 14:30 and 15:00 local time. The precipitation fell across rocky, impermeable terrain and accelerated rapidly down a 5,500-foot descent toward the canyon floor. A cascade of mud, water, boulders, and debris rushed down Bright Angel Creek, destroying footbridges and washing out sections of the lower North Kaibab Trail. The torrent inundated the area around Phantom Ranch, a stone cabin settlement along the creek, before discharging metal debris and sediment into the Colorado River. Park officials closed the Colorado River to all river traffic and shut down Black Bridge, Silver Bridge, and Bright Angel Campground.
- Torrential monsoon storm triggers flash flooding in Bright Angel Canyon
- Helicopter crews airlift initial 45 stranded survivors to safety
- Rescue operations evacuate remaining 37 people from Phantom Ranch area
- Park management closes South Rim overnight lodging and institutes Stage 4 water limits
- Search teams scour Bright Angel Creek corridor for one missing hiker
Multi-day rescue operation and search for the missing
Emergency response crews mobilized immediately on Saturday afternoon, utilizing helicopters and night vision equipment to evacuate stranded visitors from the canyon floor. Incident Commander Dave Black confirmed that rescue teams airlifted 45 survivors on Saturday and extracted an additional 37 individuals by Sunday afternoon, totaling 82 safe evacuations. Park authorities initially reported that up to 30 people were unaccounted for, later lowering the estimate to 15 after cross-referencing backcountry permits and parking lot vehicle license plates. Search teams focused their efforts on the rugged corridor between Phantom Ranch and Cottonwood Manzanita to locate the final unaccounted hiker, while technical search units from the US Border Patrol deployed to assist.
As of right now, they have no reason to believe, from the tips we've been through so far, that there's anybody besides the one.

Victims identified and eyewitness accounts
Park officials confirmed that two adult males died after being swept downstream during the initial surge. The National Park Service identified the victims as 46-year-old chiropractor John Giusti, whose body was discovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River, and 42-year-old martial arts studio owner Brent Rosenkranz. Both men were residents of Granbury, Texas, and had been camping at the canyon bottom since Friday alongside 53-year-old pilot Timothy Allen Smith, who remains missing. Chief Park Ranger Justin Cully noted that unregistered day hikers without backcountry permits could have been present in the area when the surge occurred. Eyewitnesses at the campground described a rapid transition from clear skies to a chaotic evacuation.
It was a beautiful day and then people were screaming, running.
Infrastructure disruption and environmental factors
The floodwaters caused severe damage to Grand Canyon infrastructure, destroying roughly 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline, which supplies potable water to park facilities and approximately 2,500 local residents. In response, park management instituted Stage 4 water conservation restrictions and closed all overnight guest lodging on the South Rim indefinitely as of 31 August, including El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, and Yavapai Lodge. Both the North and South rims remained open for daytime visitors, though all South Rim campfires were banned and river recreation remained halted. Scientists and meteorologists noted that the flood was magnified by seasonal monsoon moisture, prolonged regional drought, and a July 2025 wildfire that burned nearly 60,000 hectares, creating burn scars where post-fire runoff risks were estimated to be two to eight times higher than normal.
The rain just happened to fall over the wrong place. It happened to fall over a very sensitive area.
