Górnik Zabrze falls 1-0 in Istanbul as Talisca free kick gives Fenerbahce narrow Champions League edge

Fenerbahce dominated possession and hit the woodwork twice, but the home side found the net only once. In the 37th minute, Brazilian midfielder Anderson Talisca bent a direct free kick around the wall, with the ball bouncing inside the penalty area and beating goalkeeper Philipp Schulze to his left. The Turkish vice-champions could not add to their tally despite headers from Talisca and Bartug Elmaz that struck the crossbar, and a late headed chance from debutant Mason Greenwood that flew over.

Fenerbahce is very, very strong with big stars in the squad, and they did not score a goal against us from open play. Respect to the players, who gave their maximum on that pitch.

Górnik's best opportunity came in the 16th minute, when Erik Janża's powerful drive was parried by Mert Gunok. The Polish side defended in a compact block and, despite Fenerbahce's territorial superiority, restricted clear openings.

Górnik's defensive resolve

Coach Michal Gasparik acknowledged the pressure his team absorbed but praised the discipline. He noted his squad was surprised by the hosts' starting XI, which included new signings Nathan Ake and Nelson Semedo. The American midfielder Maximilian Dietz made his Górnik debut after arriving from 2. Bundesliga club SpVgg Greuther Fürth, while Schulze guarded the net as Tomasz Loska began a three-match suspension carried over from his time at Śląsk Wrocław.

Everyone who knows a bit about football and watches it knows how this match was going to look. We wanted to sting them, we looked for chances on the counter or from corners, but it was hard. The only plus is that we give ourselves a chance to fight in Zabrze.

Around 300 Górnik supporters travelled on three chartered flights, but they were drowned out by the capacity home crowd in Kadiköy.

Podolski demands home win

Club owner and former Germany international Lukas Podolski flew from the World Cup final in New York to Istanbul to watch his team. He described the 1-0 away loss as a super result and set the tone for the second leg.

That is only 1-0 and the chances of achieving something in the return leg are big. Next week we play at home and we want to win this match to go through to the next round.

Podolski urged his players to embrace the rhythm of matches every three days and to treat the return fixture like a knockout World Cup tie.

Turkish frustration

While the result was a win, the mood among Fenerbahce fans was far from festive. Many took to social media to voice discontent with a performance that produced only a single goal from a set piece.

It won't work, coach, it won't work. With football like this it won't work. Counters ineffective, no build-up play, no progress, finishing zero. Playing like this there will be no success.

Turkish outlets FotoMac and others nevertheless described the outcome as a favourable lead, noting that Górnik remains alive. The away side's narrow deficit ensures a tense night in Zabrze on 29 July.

Return leg setup

Górnik will host the decider at Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla, knowing a 1-0 win would force extra time. Gasparik plans to tweak the approach and take more risks, while acknowledging that Fenerbahce's ball control will still be a factor. The Turkish club spent over 80 million euros on summer reinforcements, including Greenwood from Olympique Marseille for nearly half that amount, but their new-look attack managed only the Talisca free kick. Janicki stressed that the team will wait for the right moment to push forward, likely after the 60th or 70th minute, rather than exposing themselves early.
