Google and hardware partners unveil first Googlebook laptops starting at $899

Hardware specifications and manufacturing standards

Google and five personal computer manufacturers have introduced the Googlebook laptop line, establishing a new hardware ecosystem centered on Android and ChromeOS foundations. Hardware partners Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo opened preorders on 21 September 2026, ahead of in-store availability scheduled for 4 October. Google requires all partner machines to satisfy strict build requirements, including premium chassis materials such as aluminum, magnesium, or carbon fiber. Each machine must feature a touchscreen display, a backlit keyboard, studio-quality microphones with noise cancellation, Dolby Atmos speakers, at least 14 hours of battery life, and minimum specifications of 16 gigabytes of RAM alongside neural processors delivering over 45 tera operations per second (TOPS). Every model includes an exterior LED light strip known as the Glowbar, which users can customize to sync with audio or display distinct animations.

Initial device lineup and silicon options

The initial hardware lineup features five computers with retail starting prices ranging from $899 to $1,299. Acer launched the Acer Googlebook 14, the only 2-in-1 convertible in the release, at an introductory price of $899 with an Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7 processor and up to 16 hours of battery life. Asus introduced a 2.2-pound (1.0-kilogram) 14-inch model featuring a 3K OLED touch panel and HDMI connectivity for $1,299. Dell released a 13-inch XPS Googlebook powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite at $1,199, while HP and Lenovo launched 14-inch and 15.3-inch clamshells priced at $1,299. MediaTek has also engineered its 3nm ARM-based Dimensity CX C10 Max chip with a 55 TOPS neural processor for future Googlebook models. Every laptop comes with ten years of operating system updates, a one-year subscription to Google AI Pro with 5 terabytes of cloud storage, and three-month trials for Adobe Photoshop, YouTube Premium, and CapCut.

Operating system architecture and smartphone continuity

GooglebookOS merges the Android software stack with desktop interface elements from ChromeOS, allowing Android applications from the Google Play Store to run natively. The software focuses on deep synchronization with Android smartphones. The Continue on utility transfers active mobile applications directly to the laptop taskbar so users can resume work with a physical keyboard. For mobile software that lacks custom desktop layouts, the App Cast feature duplicates the phone display on the computer monitor, enabling full control through the trackpad and keyboard.

Embedded artificial intelligence capabilities

The operating system incorporates Gemini artificial intelligence features directly into navigation and productivity workflows. The Magic Pointer system allows users to shake the mouse cursor over on-screen content to prompt context analysis, recognizing calendar entries or identifying visual subjects. Google also integrated its Rambler voice dictation software natively across the desktop interface, transcribing spoken words in any text input field. The interface adopts Material Three Expressive styling with AI-generated widgets, customizable taskbars, and quick settings adapted from mobile Android releases.
