Microsoft tests Exchange Online fix after authentication fault halts Outlook email
An authentication component error inside Microsoft Exchange Online disabled email delivery, logins, and calendar tools for millions of users on 31 August 2026 before technicians began deploying server updates.
Disruption across Microsoft 365 and Outlook
A worldwide cloud infrastructure outage disabled email communications and productivity tools for millions of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft 365 users on Monday, 31 August 2026. The incident hit both enterprise corporate accounts and individual personal mailboxes across multiple continents. Users reported widespread authentication failures that prevented logins, while active sessions failed to deliver incoming emails or transmit outbound messages. The failure extended across the full Exchange Online platform, disrupting message search tools, address book contacts, shared calendars, and task management systems. In addition, desktop client applications froze repeatedly on user workstations when attempting to synchronize offline mailboxes with disconnected cloud servers. The multi-hour breakdown left users unable to complete basic mailbox operations or access historical email records.
Authentication failure in Exchange Online cloud
Microsoft traced the failure to a breakdown within the cloud architecture supporting Exchange Online, its hosted platform for corporate messaging and administrative services. System investigations identified a fault in a central authentication and connection component that blocked client software from validating user credentials and reaching mail servers. The company assigned the internal tracking identifier EX1464935 to the event while engineers analyzed infrastructure diagnostic data and real-time service telemetry. After isolating the faulty component, technical teams formulated a remediation strategy and began testing the fix on a limited portion of the infrastructure before initiating broader server updates.
At 12:43 PM Eastern Time on Monday, Microsoft posted a diagnostic assessment on X outlining its initial findings:
We've confirmed that users may experience degraded functionality with various Exchange Online functionalities. We're reviewing service telemetry and diagnostic data to isolate the source of the issue.
Outage progression and monitoring data
First signs of service instability emerged around 11:30 AM Eastern Time on Monday as problem reports began accumulating on the outage tracking website Downdetector. By 14:00 (2:00 PM Eastern Time), the volume of reported disruptions on the platform surpassed 5,000, while numerous other users posted error notices directly to social media networks such as X. In Europe, Downdetector recorded nearly 6,000 user reports by 18:00, with disruption complaints continuing past 23:00. Disruption volumes on monitoring portals expanded into the tens of thousands during the evening hours as the outage persisted. The operational effect varied regionally, with European countries such as Belgium experiencing mitigated workplace disruption because the peak failure developed outside standard business hours.

Technical guidance and phased restoration
As the disruption stretched over several hours, IT specialists cautioned affected individuals and enterprise administrators against modifying local computer configurations or reinstalling Outlook software. Because the root malfunction was entirely server-side within Microsoft cloud data centres, alterations to local workstations could not restore connectivity. Support specialists also instructed users to avoid repeatedly clicking manual send on outgoing emails stalled in their outboxes, warning that repeated attempts would generate duplicate message deliveries once server connections normalized. Microsoft engineers initiated a progressive rollout of software updates across affected servers to restore normal service, though the company left open the exact timeframe for full global recovery.
