Disney+ and Hulu confirm Glee revival, a decade after the 2015 finale

A revival confirmed

Disney+ and Hulu have ordered a new Glee series, a revival of the musical comedy that ran on Fox for six seasons between 2009 and 2015. Disney confirmed the project on Wednesday, 21 October, in a joint post saying the series will screen on Hulu. The original show followed the New Directions glee club at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, through issues around relationships, family, sexuality and teamwork. 20th Television, which produced the original series, is also involved in the new project. Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk wrote the first two seasons and are behind the new script.

The joint post used a short line to make the announcement:

“It's Official, Glee is returning.”

Script and the original cast

Murphy told Entertainment Tonight in September that he had finished the script, and he said he had been in touch with around 10 original cast members. Describing their reaction to the idea, he said:

“They all had a lot of questions but they were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry across all six seasons, has said she would be delighted to take part again. Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, has been more cautious and considers a return complicated after the death of Naya Rivera. Disney and Hulu have not confirmed which members of the original cast will take part.

The timeline runs from the 2009 premiere on Fox to the 2015 finale, with the revival stages added in July and September 2026. Murphy's remarks about returning to the series came in July, when he said the show had regained popularity among young viewers. He said in September that he had finished the script. Disney's confirmation on 21 October is the latest step in that sequence, and the chart lists the milestones stated across the articles.

Losses among the cast

Three members of the original cast have died, and one of those deaths, that of Cory Monteith in 2013, came while the show was still on air. Monteith played Finn Hudson and died at the age of 31. Mark Salling, who played Noah 'Puck' Puckerman, died in 2018 at 35. Naya Rivera, who played cheerleader Santana Lopez, died in 2020 at 33 in an accidental drowning. Those absences will shape any new version, and no production details yet explain how the new series will handle them.

What remains unknown

No storyline, premiere date or cast list has been announced. The production schedule and release date have not been made public. In September Murphy said nobody had yet read the script, so the response to it remains untested. Disney has said the series will screen on Hulu, with no date attached.
