Samuel Giger defeats Marcel Bieri to defend Kilchberger Schwinget title

Final bout at Stockengut

The 18th Kilchberger Schwinget concluded on Saturday in the temporary arena on the Stockengut overlooking Lake Zurich, where a capacity crowd of 10,000 spectators filled every seat. Samuel Giger of Thurgau entered the decisive final bout with a strategic advantage, needing only a draw to secure the overall festival victory, while Marcel Bieri of Zug required an outright win to take first place. Bieri attacked immediately after the referee started the bout, but Giger neutralized the initial offensive without conceding ground. Giger then launched an explosive counterattack, executing a decisive Kurz maneuver after just over two minutes to pin Bieri flat on his back. The victory sparked visible emotion from Giger on the sawdust ring, while his wife Michelle celebrated the result in the grandstands.

Return from shoulder injury

Giger entered the tournament following a three-month absence caused by a shoulder injury sustained at the end of May. His readiness for the festival had remained uncertain throughout the summer, and he competed without any prior competitive benchmarks, wearing only black protective tape visible beneath his shirt sleeve. During the morning program, Giger started strongly by pinning Matthias Aeschbacher and Sinisha Lüscher in succession. He faced a sudden reverse in his third bout against Michael Ledermann, where he appeared in control before unexpectedly being thrown onto his back. Giger regained his form in the fifth round by throwing Bernese wrestler Michael Moser with a Kurz move in approximately 45 seconds, confirming his place in the Schlussgang.

Favourites stumble as Bieri advances

The final pairing produced a surprise after pre-tournament favourites from the Bernese wrestling association fell out of contention, including Werner Schlegel and Fabian Staudenmann. Staudenmann had entered Kilchberg after winning five consecutive festivals during the season and stayed on course through lunchtime by beating Adrian Odermatt and Joel Strebel following an opening draw against Armon Orlik. However, Staudenmann fell out of title contention after recording two afternoon draws against co-defending champion Damian Ott in the fourth round and Michael Gwerder in the fifth round, eventually taking fourth place overall with a final win against Josias Müller. Instead, the 31-year-old Bieri advanced to the final by recovering from an earlier loss against Ott with victories over Lario Kramer, David Scheuner, and Josias Müller, before defeating king Armon Orlik in the fifth round.

Title defence and historical standing

Giger completed the day with five victories from six bouts, securing the Kilchberger Schwinget crown as an outright winner. Five years earlier in 2021, Giger had defeated king Kilian Wenger in the Schlussgang to share the festival title alongside Staudenmann and Ott, all three of whom returned to compete in the 2026 edition. With his 2026 victory, Giger matched the path of Christian Stucki, who similarly overcame a long injury break in 2019 to win the federal title. Giger became only the second wrestler in the competition's history to successfully defend the Kilchberg title, joining Karl Meli, who won the festival in 1967 and 1973.
