Germany came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 at BMO Field on Saturday night, securing a direct ticket to the World Cup round of 16 from Group E. Franck Kessié had given the Ivorians a first-half lead, but substitute Denis Undav struck twice after the break to flip the match on its head. The result means the 2014 champions have maximum points from two games, building on their opening 7-1 rout of Curaçao.

The loss leaves Ivory Coast on three points, still in a strong position to advance if they beat Curaçao in their final group outing. Émerse Faé’s side had opened with a 1-0 win over Ecuador, Amad Diallo scoring the winner deep in stoppage time. Germany’s qualification is already sealed; the remaining ticket from the group will be decided when Ivory Coast face the minnows.

Ecuador vs Curaçao: last-chance saloon

At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Ecuador and Curaçao meet in the early hours of Sunday (European time) with both nations desperate for a first point. Ecuador were beaten 1-0 by Ivory Coast and Curaçao were demolished 7-1 by Germany, putting each on zero points and a negative goal difference. Defeat for either side would likely mean elimination, while a draw would likely not be enough for either. Coach Sebastián Beccacece and his Curaçao counterpart Dick Advocaat named strong lineups for the fixture.

A quick look at Group F

Saturday’s other World Cup action saw Group F continue, with the Netherlands aiming to rebound against Sweden after a 2-2 draw with Japan. Sweden had thumped Tunisia 5-1 in their opener. Tunisia, now coached by Hervé Renard after the sacking of Sabri Lamouchi, faced Japan in Monterrey hoping for a reset following that drubbing. Results of those matches were not available at the time of writing.

Administrative side-note

In a minor subplot, French striker Elye Wahi was given clearance to re-enter Canada ahead of Ivory Coast’s match against Germany after what local media described as a “rocambolesque” travel-authorisation saga. The clearance ensured he was available for selection at BMO Field, though his impact on the night was limited.
