
RKI estimates 15,800 heat deaths in Germany through mid-August 2026
A Robert Koch Institute report attributes 15,800 fatalities between April and mid-August to extreme temperatures, with peaks in late June and early August hitting older demographics hardest.
National death toll and seasonal peaks
According to statistical estimates released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), approximately 15,800 people in Germany died from heat-related causes between 6 April and 16 August 2026. The RKI weekly report documented two distinct temperature spikes that accounted for the majority of these fatalities. The largest peak occurred during the second half of June, when temperatures exceeded 41 degrees Celsius and contributed to an estimated 9,600 deaths. A second severe phase during the first two weeks of August resulted in roughly 4,000 additional fatalities. Nationwide, the estimated death toll increased by 1,800 in the latest weekly reporting period alone.
Demographic breakdown and clinical causes
Data published by the RKI shows that elderly residents were the most heavily affected by the high temperatures. More than half of all victims, approximately 7,960 individuals, were aged 85 or older. An additional 3,900 deaths occurred in the 75 to 84 age group, 2,440 among people aged 65 to 74, and 1,470 among individuals younger than 65. The RKI noted that women accounted for a larger proportion of the dead, explaining that this outcome reflects general demographic age distributions rather than biological susceptibility. In some instances, exposure to high temperatures caused direct death through heatstroke, but in the vast majority of cases, heat accelerated fatalities by aggravating pre-existing cardiovascular, pulmonary, or kidney conditions. Statistical modeling was used because death certificates rarely cite heat directly, as noted by Uwe Janssens, medical director of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), who observed that organ failure is routinely recorded instead.

Regional differences across federal states
Regional mortality rates varied widely across the country, with southwestern states recording the highest concentration of fatalities per capita. Saarland registered the highest rate in Germany at 52.6 deaths per 100,000 residents, followed closely by Rhineland-Palatinate at 47.6 deaths per 100,000. In Rhineland-Palatinate, total heat-related deaths reached approximately 1,960 by mid-August, compared to a rate of 6.1 per 100,000 recorded the previous year. North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, recorded 3,130 heat-related deaths up to 16 August, following a weekly rise of roughly 270 fatalities in the second week of August, resulting in a rate of 17.4 per 100,000. In eastern states, Saxony recorded approximately 550 heat deaths, while Saxony-Anhalt reported 240 fatalities, representing 11.2 deaths per 100,000 residents. Schleswig-Holstein registered the lowest mortality rate in the country at 2.4 deaths per 100,000, far below the national average of 19.0.

Historical comparisons and conservative estimates
The 15,800 estimated heat-related fatalities represent the highest total recorded by the RKI in at least ten years. The previous highest nationwide figures since 2016 were 9,500 deaths in 2018 and 7,600 deaths in 2019. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the previous ten-year high was 2,260 deaths in 2018, while Rhineland-Palatinate recorded approximately 620 heat deaths in that same year. Saxony also exceeded its 2018 total of around 530 deaths. In Saxony-Anhalt, the 2018 figure of 320 deaths remains the only annual count higher than the 2026 total. RKI officials stated that these figures remain conservative estimates and noted that past years are routinely recalculated each month as new data arrives, indicating that final numbers for 2026 could rise further.
