The rocket took off from the Norwegian coastal facility at 22:12 local time following several earlier launch attempts. A live video broadcast transmitted footage of the ascent across northern skies before ground controllers lost contact. The video transmission to the ground cut off after ten minutes when the ascending vehicle surpassed the maximum reception range of the transmission link. Mission profile and payload cargo
The flight was designed to serve as both the qualification mission for the Spectrum launch vehicle and its first operation carrying active payload cargo. On board the rocket were five mini-satellites and an in-flight scientific and technological experiment intended to collect operational telemetry. Isar Aerospace engineered the Spectrum rocket specifically to deploy small and medium-sized payloads into low Earth orbit once the launcher achieves series production maturity. The startup aims to become the first commercial space mission to reach Earth orbit from a launch site on continental European soil.
Ahead of Saturday's launch, Isar Aerospace co-founder and chief executive officer Daniel Metzler released a statement outlining the logistical and security challenges confronting European space infrastructure.
Access to space remains one of the biggest constraints for the space industry and national security architecture.
Progress following the March 2025 explosion
Saturday's flight took place 18 months after Isar Aerospace suffered a launch failure during its initial test in March 2025. During that first mission from the same launchpad at Andøya, the prototype rocket plunged back to the ground and exploded in a fiery spectacle shortly after takeoff. No personnel were injured during the explosion, and company leaders classified the flight as a success because the vehicle generated large volumes of flight data for developers. Those telemetry datasets allowed Bavarian engineers to refine flight systems and propulsion components over the subsequent 18 months, clearing the second Spectrum rocket for launch with active payloads on board.
European autonomy and orbital launch competition
The Spectrum flight reflects broader European initiatives to build sovereign space launch infrastructure and secure direct orbital access from the continent. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the Andøya launch facility in March to inspect the site and review program preparations. European policymakers have placed greater emphasis on autonomous launch capability as the international order once championed by the United States is upended under U.S. President Donald Trump.
The commercial satellite launch sector is currently dominated by American operators and overseas facilities. United States company SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, conducts regular commercial flights from American launch complexes. European orbital missions have historically relied on French manufacturer ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran, which operates out of a spaceport located in French Guiana in South America. If the Spectrum vehicle achieves regular commercial service, it will offer European satellite operators a domestic launch alternative and reduce reliance on American launch providers.
