Brandenburg police received an emergency call shortly before 08:00 on 1 September 2026 after employees detected damage to overhead transmission lines at a substation in Turnow-Preilack, located in the Spree-Neiße district. Emergency responders reached the facility roughly 40 minutes later and confirmed physical damage to the equipment. Officers discovered multiple improvised explosive and incendiary devices placed at the site, prompting an immediate call for bomb disposal specialists. State police confirmed that at least one device detonated, while several other devices failed to ignite. Authorities stated that the incident posed no direct danger to the general public, and the State Criminal Police Office of Brandenburg took over the investigation. While early regional reports suggested the use of pyrotechnic rockets, police spokespersons stated that the devices were unexploded improvised explosives rather than commercial fireworks.

Substation damage and grid stability

The Turnow-Preilack facility serves as a key junction that transfers electricity generated at the neighboring Jänschwalde brown coal power station into the high-voltage transmission grid. Jänschwalde is the largest power station in Brandenburg, operating with an installed capacity of 1,500 megawatts after being constructed between 1976 and 1989. Transmission system operator 50Hertz stated that unidentified perpetrators damaged several overhead lines during the morning hours. The damage caused a brief transmission interruption, but technicians restored all affected circuits without creating a widespread blackout. Plant operator Leag stated that Block B at Jänschwalde experienced a technical fault around the same time, leading technicians to evaluate whether the substation detonation caused the operational malfunction.

Political reactions in Brandenburg

Regional political leaders condemned the event as a deliberate assault on essential energy networks. Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Woidke stated on Tuesday that the regional government would resist criminal pressure.

“Whoever tries to sabotage our critical infrastructure and paralyze social life is attacking all of us.”

Dietmar Woidke affirmed that authorities would not be intimidated by illegal actions against utility networks. Brandenburg Infrastructure Minister Robert Crumbach expressed similar concern regarding the threat posed to regional supply security.
