Baden-Württemberg outdoor pools log visitor gains as midweek cold front nears

Rising attendance across municipal pools

Municipal outdoor pools across Baden-Württemberg recorded elevated attendance numbers through early September following sustained high summer temperatures. In Stuttgart, the state capital, all five municipal outdoor pools logged a combined 718,399 visitors through 9 September. A city spokesperson stated that this figure represented an increase of 170,247 bathers compared to the same period in the prior year. City officials noted that the continuous high capacity strained both facility staff and technical installations throughout the operational period. In Reutlingen, the local wave pool recorded approximately 275,000 admissions by 8 September, marking its fourth-busiest season since the facility opened. Municipal utility representatives in Reutlingen projected cumulative season attendance to reach approximately 276,000 visitors by the official season closing on 13 September.

Public bath operators in other regional centers observed similar growth patterns. Stadtwerke Heilbronn reported an attendance increase of approximately 23% over the prior year. In Ravensburg, the Flappachbad counted roughly 90,000 visitors, which was approximately 10,000 higher than the count recorded at the same point in the previous season. Lakeside and open-air facilities in Konstanz also registered higher guest numbers than in the preceding year.

Security assessments and police interventions

A survey conducted by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur among pool operators across the southwest found that daily operations remained largely orderly. In Stuttgart, municipal authorities recorded no severe incidents, and the number of facility bans remained at a moderate level. In Konstanz, site managers reported minor infringements of pool regulations, including jumping into pools without authorization, smoking outside designated zones, and verbal disagreements, determining that permanent private security staff was not required.

The number and type of incidents remained within the range of what we know from past years.

In Heilbronn, facility administrators noted isolated occurrences of assault, sexual harassment, theft, property damage, disputes, and rule violations, stating that hiring a private security firm proved effective in managing facility safety. More frequent interventions were required in communities near the French border, with police units deploying on multiple occasions to municipal pools in Kehl and Müllheim.

Weekend weather outlook

The German Weather Service (DWD) forecast a final period of late-summer warmth across Baden-Württemberg before a shift in regional weather patterns. On Saturday, 12 September, dry conditions and extensive sunshine with isolated cloud cover produced high temperatures ranging from 22 degrees Celsius in the Allgäu region to between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius across wider sections of the state.

Weather conditions begin to change on Sunday, 13 September. The DWD indicated that clear skies will give way to increasing cloudiness, accompanied by statewide rain showers and fresh winds, while maximum temperatures remain between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius. Precipitation is expected to persist into the morning of Monday, 14 September. High pressure will reassert itself later in the day, reducing rainfall and allowing temperatures to reach 22 to 27 degrees Celsius under sunny skies.

Midweek cold front arrival

Meteorologists projected that Tuesday, 15 September, will see slightly higher temperatures across the southwest before a cold front moves into the region. According to the DWD, the frontal system will arrive starting Wednesday, 16 September, ending the spell of late-summer weather. The incoming front will bring rainfall across Baden-Württemberg and drop daytime maximum temperatures to between 17 and 23 degrees Celsius.
