The searches
On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, prosecutors from DIICOT's central structure and officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Romanian Police executed two home search warrants in Bucharest. The case concerns illegal operations involving IT devices or programmes, pursued as authorship and instigation, along with attempts to alter computer data and disrupt IT systems. According to judicial sources cited by G4Media, the searches covered Călin Georgescu's home and the home of a specialist he allegedly engaged. DIICOT's communiqué did not name Georgescu. Reports link the investigation to the separate case in which Georgescu is already in preventive detention.
What prosecutors allege
According to the DIICOT communiqué, a 35-year-old man scanned or checked Georgescu's property in the commune of Mogoșoaia, Ilfov County, on 26 September 2026, at Georgescu's request. The stated aim was to locate the audio-video recording equipment used by judicial authorities, and also to alter computer data or disrupt the systems used for covert surveillance. The visit came five days after DIICOT prosecutors searched the same villa on 21 September 2026, in a criminal case in which technical surveillance measures had also been applied. Prosecutors say both men knew about those circumstances. The villa lies outside Bucharest, while the searches on 21 October took place in the capital.
“The intended result, altering computer data and disrupting or damaging the technical means used by judicial bodies, did not occur for reasons independent of the suspects' will.”
Georgescu's legal position
Georgescu is already in preventive detention in another DIICOT case, according to judicial sources cited by G4Media. Digi24 reports that he is accused in a fraud case of deceiving a businessman out of more than one million euros. One report said that, if confirmed, the new file would be his fourth criminal case and the second handled by DIICOT. Georgescu's lawyer, who was at DIICOT headquarters, told reporters he did not yet know the accusations. In the fraud case, prosecutors reportedly asked for the preventive measure against Georgescu to be extended.
Technical findings and next steps
Prosecutors acknowledged that the surveillance equipment had not been altered, and DIICOT says the attempt failed for reasons beyond the suspects' control. After the searches, the people involved were taken to DIICOT's central structure for questioning, with support from gendarmes of the Special Intervention Brigade. The communiqué stresses that those under investigation are presumed innocent and remain entitled to the procedural rights and guarantees set out by law. No new charges against Georgescu were announced in the reports available at the time of writing.
