Google started rolling out Personal Intelligence on Android Auto on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, excluding users in Switzerland, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
Vehicles with Google built-in get the feature in the coming months, the company said. Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar have shipped newer cars with that software.
Personal Intelligence is off by default and must be enabled in settings, and Google says personalised responses only work while the phone is connected to the car.
Google has started rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto, letting the assistant answer drivers with information drawn from the company's apps. The rollout began on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. According to Google, Gemini can connect to Workspace, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search, and can retrieve details such as a particular email, a photo or a saved place. Cars with Google built-in, which put Google software directly in the infotainment system, are due to receive the feature in the coming months. The Android Auto rollout is global, except for users in Switzerland, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
Users can speak to Gemini in natural language without restating context. Google's examples include asking for a flight gate while driving to the airport, or asking Gemini to take them to "take me to my doctor's appointment" without typing an address. In an unfamiliar city, a driver can ask for dinner spots along the route, and Gemini will factor in preferences such as a vegetarian diet without the person having to specify it. Google also says the update improves Gemini's reasoning in cars, and the company said the assistant can answer two questions at the same time, such as a flight gate and whether the flight is on time. Without Personal Intelligence, navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working, though the answers are not tailored, Google has said.
The feature is opt-in and off by default. Google says it links apps to Gemini only when the Personal Intelligence setting is switched on, and that personalised responses appear only when the phone is connected to the car. Drivers can switch the feature off at any time and pick which apps the assistant may use, the company said. Google has also stated that information processed through Personal Intelligence stays within its existing secure infrastructure. Ars Technica reports that the Personal Intelligence setting may carry over from the Gemini app to the car, and that it is unclear whether vehicles with Google built-in will get a separate settings screen. The same outlet notes that other people in the car may interact with the screen, which makes the setting worth checking.
Google brought Gemini to Android Auto in 2025. Personal Intelligence debuted in Gemini at the start of 2026 and was initially limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. An expansion in March brought it to free accounts. Gemini then reached cars with Google built-in in April, and several carmakers, including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar, have shipped newer cars with that software.
TechCrunch notes that Gemini is already in millions of cars, trucks and SUVs, so the feature extends a large installed base. Google frames the feature as a fit for driving, letting people rely on the assistant for context rather than issuing detailed instructions. Cars with Google built-in are next, with timing given only as the coming months.
