Arthur Gea wins first ATP title at Los Cabos, breaks into Top 100 at age 21

Arthur Gea captured his first ATP Tour title on Saturday at the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos, Mexico, defeating defending champion Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. The 21-year-old Frenchman, ranked 127th entering the tournament, controlled the hard-court final from the baseline and closed out a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 1 hour 29 minutes.

The final

Gea saved four break points at 2-2 in the opening set before breaking Shapovalov's serve at 4-3. He served out the set comfortably. After an exchange of early holds in the second set, Gea struck the decisive break at 3-3 and did not relinquish the advantage, finishing the match with a love hold.

I was very nervous before this first final, but I had a game plan and I stuck to it.

Gea faced seven break points across the match and saved six of them. Shapovalov, the 68th-ranked Canadian and 2025 champion, could not find an answer to the Frenchman's serving rhythm and forehand pressure.

Road to the title

Gea arrived in Los Cabos with only three career wins on the main ATP circuit. His previous best result was a quarter-final appearance in Montpellier in February. During the week in Mexico, he beat two Top 20 players, including Francisco Cerundolo (20th) in the quarter-finals. Earlier this year, he defeated Jiri Lehecka, then ranked 19th, in the first round of the Australian Open.

Ranking and milestones

With the title, Gea will rise to 81st in the ATP rankings on Monday, his first entry into the Top 100. He becomes the sixth player born in 2005 or later to win an ATP title, joining Joao Fonseca, Jakub Mensik, Lerner Tien, Rafael Jodar and Shang Junchen. He is also the fourth Frenchman to win a tour-level title in 2026, after Arthur Fils (Barcelona), Quentin Halys (Kitzbühel) and Luca Van Assche (Estoril).

What's next

Gea turned professional in 2025 and has spent most of his career on the Challenger circuit. He reached the Wimbledon junior doubles final in 2023 and made the US Open junior semi-finals the same year. Speaking after the final, Gea said he hopes to receive a wild card from the French Tennis Federation for the US Open, which begins in four weeks.

I hope to receive a wild card from the Federation for the US Open. I think I deserve it after a great week like this.
