Pavia prosecutors file new forensic findings as Stasi seeks Garlasco revision

New autopsy findings extend time of death

A medical report deposited at the Pavia Prosecutor's Office on 21 September 2026 by Cristina Cattaneo and Biagio Eugenio Leone revises the timeline of Chiara Poggi's murder on 13 August 2007. The initial 2007 examination established a broad window between 07:00 and 12:30. The new findings determine that Poggi suffered an assault lasting tens of minutes, with death occurring between 15 and 60 minutes after the first blow.

Analysis of post-cranial wounds indicates that Poggi actively and passively defended herself rather than suffering accidental impacts. The initial injuries were located on the left frontal area of her skull, causing her to collapse before subsequent trauma occurred. Cellular examination identified weak, discontinuous E-selectin staining at three lesion sites, supporting an estimated survival window approaching 60 minutes after the onset of the assault.

DNA discrepancies on bicycle pedals

Parallel filings focus on forensic tests conducted by the Carabinieri RIS in September 2007 on the pedals of Alberto Stasi's Umberto Dei bicycle. While tests on 19 September 2007 identified genetic traces attributed to Poggi, subsequent tests on the same sample (designated bu_p) on 20 September 2007 yielded flat electrophoretic results showing no genetic profiles.

Geneticists Ugo Ricci and Pasquale Linarello stated in their consultation that the unconfirmed 19 September finding should never have entered the trial record without disclosing the subsequent negative results. On 18 September 2026, prosecutors Stefano Civardi and Valentina Di Stefano questioned RIS Captain Alberto Marino in a 34-page deposition regarding why the negative runs were dismissed as non-informative null results and withheld from trial dossiers until late 2025.

Defense moves toward sentence revision

Alberto Stasi, now 43 years old, was sentenced to 16 years in prison following two prior acquittals and has served 10 years in detention. In June 2026, Stasi transitioned to probation through community service in Milan. His defense attorneys, Giada Bocellari and Antonio De Renzis, are incorporating the new medical and genetic findings alongside wiretap evidence into a formal petition for revision.

The defense file includes an audio recording from 9 February 2017, in which Andrea Sempio spoke alone in his vehicle about an intimate video recorded between Poggi and Stasi. Sempio has been under investigation by Pavia prosecutors for 18 months, with prosecutors preparing a potential indictment request.

Testimonies describe initial crime scene disorder

Depositions submitted following the closure of the investigation also describe operational difficulties during the initial inquiry. Former RIS biology section commander Marco Pizzamiglio testified before prosecutors Giuliana Rizza and Valentina De Stefano about the arrival of forensic teams on 13 August 2007. Pizzamiglio stated that Carabinieri leadership faced personnel shortages due to a concurrent double homicide in Treviso and the absence of commander Luciano Garofano on vacation. He reported that investigators encountered an uncontained crime scene surrounded by media and extensive blood evidence.
