Celta Vigo's LaLiga opener postponed as fungus ruins Balaídos pitch
Celta Vigo's season-opening LaLiga match against Osasuna on August 16 has been postponed after a fungal outbreak rendered the Estadio de Balaídos pitch unfit, with the fixture rescheduled for August 27 amid objections from Osasuna over the new date.
Pitch disease forces postponement
Celta Vigo's LaLiga season opener against Osasuna, scheduled for Sunday August 16 at Estadio Abanca Balaídos, was postponed on Thursday after a fungal outbreak left the pitch unfit for football. LaLiga, in coordination with both clubs and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), agreed to the postponement following a technical inspection. The match has been rescheduled for Thursday August 27, though sources disagree on the kick-off time, with one listing 20:30 and another 21:30.
The inspection found that a fungal outbreak had damaged the Balaídos playing surface, while adverse weather conditions, including high temperatures and rain, undermined recent recovery efforts. Celta's first competitive match of the season will now be against Valencia CF on August 22, while Osasuna will face Levante on August 24.
Celta's account of the outbreak
Carlos Cao, Celta's director of infrastructure, said the club detected the fungus in recent weeks and treated it as on previous occasions. The pitch initially responded well, and Celta informed LaLiga last week about the disease. LaLiga sent technicians for an inspection and issued a favorable report on the work carried out, with everything pointing to the pitch being in optimal condition a week and a half before the opener.
However, during morning mowing on Tuesday, staff detected that the disease had not only stalled in its recovery but had expanded, becoming more noticeable in the central areas of the pitch. Celta communicated the new situation to LaLiga, which conducted a second inspection. Cao said the league's technicians were surprised by the regression, having confirmed the treatment was correct.
Faced with what Celta described as a "drástica" situation, the club decided to completely replace the pitch. Cao explained that waiting two to four weeks for the disease to run its course was not feasible because of the tight calendar, with the reserve team Celta Fortuna also playing at Balaídos and a match scheduled for August 24.
Osasuna's objections
Osasuna issued a statement expressing understanding for the pitch problem but deep dissatisfaction with the rescheduled date. The Navarrese club said it had an agreement with Celta to play the match on September 24 or 25, during the international break, to avoid overloading the calendar and allow player recovery at a sensitive period for injuries. Osasuna claimed both LaLiga and the RFEF were aware of this agreement but ignored it, unilaterally setting the match for August 27.
The club objected to being required to play on Monday August 24 against Levante and then Thursday August 27 against Celta, including travel, without LaLiga even considering moving the Osasuna-Levante match forward to allow more rest days. Osasuna also noted that its first two home matches were scheduled for Mondays, which it described as disrespectful.
Broader LaLiga scheduling context
The Celta-Osasuna postponement is one of several delayed season-opening fixtures. Three other matches were pushed back because of player involvement in the World Cup 2026 semifinals: Valencia vs Betis on August 25, Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad on August 26, and Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao on August 27. Celta had also been entitled to a postponement due to Borja Iglesias's participation in the World Cup 2026 but had initially declined that option, only for the match to be postponed anyway due to the pitch crisis.
