Thousands join 260 climate marches across France after summer heatwaves

The protests followed an exceptionally hot summer in Western Europe linked to fossil fuel combustion, with repeat heatwaves causing more than 8,000 deaths in France. European heatwaves during 2026 generated €113 billion in economic costs according to insurer Allianz. Organizers coordinated an open letter addressed to President Emmanuel Macron that collected 51,000 signatures, demanding political accountability and systematic climate policies.

Assemblies in Paris and southern cities

In Paris, several thousand demonstrators assembled for a static demonstration at Place de la République from 17:00 to 20:00. The crowd carried banners with slogans such as "Aux arbres citoyens" and "Stop à l'amnésie climatique", while housing advocates from the Fédération des locataires Ensemble emphasized that low-income residents in poorly insulated homes faced the greatest heat risks. Professional firefighters also attended to seek increased funding and equipment following extensive forest fires in Gironde and the Arcachon basin. In southern France, police recorded 2,000 marchers in Montpellier, while approximately 500 people assembled during the morning in Marseille. Further west in Loire-Atlantique, several hundred people gathered at the Miroir d'eau in Nantes, with complementary actions organized in Saint-Nazaire, Châteaubriant, Herbignac, Pornic, Ancenis, and Clisson.

Incident in Clermont-Ferrand and northern gatherings

The demonstration in Clermont-Ferrand was halted when an automobile forced its way into the procession, causing light injuries to four people. The public prosecutor in Clermont-Ferrand confirmed that initial tests showed the 37-year-old driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of narcotics. In Arras, between 100 and 200 participants marched alongside Écologistes presidential candidate Marine Tondelier, who attended with her newborn son Léon. Retired marcher Nathalie Flautre, 70, explained that ecological issues would determine her vote in the May 2027 presidential election.

Policy demands and the upcoming adaptation plan

Rally organizers and environmental groups called for immediate adaptation and mitigation plans funded by targeted taxation on fossil fuel windfall profits, the arms industry, and high-wealth individuals. Demonstrators pointed to broader environmental damage across Europe, where at least 500,000 hectares of forest burned during the summer season. Farmers joining the marches, including Association pour une agriculture durable board member Jean-Paul Dallene from Oppy, stressed that while agriculture suffers direct impacts from climate disruptions, the sector also holds potential mitigation solutions. Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut is scheduled to present the government's official climate adaptation plan to the Prime Minister on 30 September 2026.
