The government confirmed the deaths are directly or indirectly attributed to the extreme heat, with officials bracing for further rises. Five of the victims drowned in coastal and inland waters, while two others collapsed during sports activities in major cities. Temperatures in some areas have exceeded 30°C, with the heatwave expected to peak in the coming days. The heatwave extends beyond France, affecting parts of Europe with similar sweltering conditions.

Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon addressed the crisis on TF1.

She cautioned that final figures would only be determined after the heatwave passes. The administration is monitoring the situation closely, and local media have reported a possible eighth death in the Bas-Rhin region that remains unconfirmed.

Drownings Along the Coast and Inland

The majority of the deaths involved drownings. Two occurred in Gironde, on the Atlantic coast: a German woman in her fifties and a man in his sixties from Corrèze were caught in powerful baïne currents at Lacanau and Lège-Cap-Ferret. Three additional drownings were reported in Marne, Seine-et-Marne, and Maine-et-Loire. Beaches across the country have seen near-summer crowds, but official lifeguard surveillance does not begin until July 6, raising concerns. At Anglet beach, a parent, Thomas Dupuy, expressed unease.
