A judicial court in Bayonne has recognized breast cancer as an occupational disease for a former Air France flight attendant, citing cosmic radiation, night shifts, and passive smoking across 12,600 career flight hours.

Lainault, who is 59 years old and in remission, spent 30 years with the airline between 1989 and 2019. Over that career, she accumulated more than 12,600 flight hours as a stewardess and purser on long-haul routes, with over 6,500 of those hours logged during night flights. The court confirmed that three distinct occupational hazards contributed to her condition: prolonged night work, exposure to cosmic and ionising radiation at high altitudes, and passive smoking during flights before on-board smoking was banned in 2000.

Workplace risks and scientific context
The judges determined that no genetic or lifestyle factors explained Lainault's cancer. On long-distance polar routes from Paris, flight crews encounter increased levels of radiation from solar particles and cosmic rays, as the magnetic shield of the Earth weakens near the poles. Cosmic radiation exposure during routine commercial aviation has long been considered statistically negligible for ordinary passengers, but cumulative exposure for career crew members reaches higher thresholds. An August 2026 study from Harvard Medical School examining over 500 professions found that flight attendants and pilots had the highest proportion of radiation-related cancer deaths, placing ahead of nuclear technologists in twelfth place.

Legal fight and final judgment
Lainault pursued recognition through the French legal system for two and a half years with the backing of the CFDT trade union. Two regional committees responsible for occupational illnesses previously rejected her applications, concluding that no causal link existed between her working conditions and the diagnosis. Breast cancer is not listed on the official schedule of occupational diseases in France, requiring claimants to establish individual causation through court proceedings. The Bayonne court decision became final after no appeal was filed, allowing Lainault to receive early retirement and full reimbursement for ongoing medical treatments through the French healthcare system.
